what he's telling us is they gave a verbal warning to the occupiers here at justin herman plaza. he said there were about 100 people there and more than 100 tents. the chief says about 50 people packed up and left on their own and some of them circled back around market street towards the camp. he says more than 50 people were arrested and someone threw a metal chair at two officers, one had his riot gear on and is okay. we just asked the chief why tonight? >> well, the mayor has been really thoughtfully and patiently negotiating with occupy leadership, and as of about yesterday director nuru who has been the point person for the day today contact was getting no return e-mails. department heads went over and looked at the site in the mission. it appeared all communication had broken off. after the aggressive attack on the officers and other city workers last thursday, it appeared the group deteriorated and had not only become a health hazard inside, but was becoming a public safety hazard on the outside. so the decision was made to clean it up. >> i'm still waiting to speak with

they are not allowed back inside justin herman plaza. but earlier this morning, we spoke to one of the men arrested. >> as i was driving to leave, they would in the let me leave. they took everything from me, tip-tied my arms behind my back, put me in a bus with a bunch of other people and shipped me to the jail. >> reporter: this all happened when police went in and raided occupy san francisco. there was also a showdown between officers and the protesters. now, the occupiers say they were give been --tiven -- given five minutes to get out. one man who was in the middle of the encampment said he was injured by police. >> they grabbed me by the back of the neck and one officer forced my face in the pavement and one of them said keep talking trash. keep talking trash. now you're not talking trash, you are? and they lifted me up on the pavement and banged me once good on my face on the side of the pavement. >> reporter: you can see his face. it's a little swollen. he was not taken into custody. there was a squirmish earlier. occupy people p

anne makovec is at justin herman plaza with what's next for protestors and the city. good morning. >> reporter: a deep divide here in the "occupy sf" camp. some are ready to moved. some have moved out already. the majority of campers are here at justin herman plaza after police advanced on the camp last night. here's the scene at 5 p.m. when police began encircling the camp with these barricades and some demonstrators shoved the barricades back. police were trying to create a safety zone and clear the sidewalks. >> they wanted confrontation. our mission down here was to create a safety zone. when the officers were attacked, it does give us a sense of how violent the people who remain in the camp are. >> reporter: and then proceeds walked to the federal reserve building and sat down in the middle of market street. they stayed for a little over an hour and then came back to camp and held a general assembly meeting and tried to take a vote on whether or not the group should move to the mission street location. they could not come to a consensus because they need a 100% v

a short time ago cleanup crews arrived at justin herman plaza. claudine wong has been out there all morning and is back to el tell is what's going on -- back to tell us what's going on -- the san francisco police department -- protesters were reluctant to leave but they did without any issues. a short time later, the crews arrived to begin their work. police say they will continue to keep this area clear the area down the way, it's getting pretty crowded. tear were 10 people there. now there's about 60. >> at this point, i don't have any information about the federal reserve bank. tents, not allowed, no matter what. people tried to put them up and then they had to take them down. the park here is technically closed. no word on when it will be technically back open. as far as gathering here, sfpd says -- if someone says they are coming down here to exercise their freedom of speech, they will try to make allowances to allow people to do that. if you are -- if you are coming down here to sit an sleep, that's where they will have issues. strong prese

early this mornings the encampment at justin herman plaza was raided. the tents were torn down. phil matier now on how the order to raid that encampment overnight came down. phil. >>> reporter: we're here at market street at the foot of market street, and both sides of the street are lined with helmeted and batoned-outfitted police officers in expectation of what might happen tonight. it's unclear exactly how "occupy" may move back after being removed from this piece of real estate, which is what the mayor has been trying do for months. he did it last night. it came at a price. in the end san francisco mayor lee got what he hopped for a relatively nonviolent clearing out of the "occupy" camp at justin herman plaza. the camp was the first big test of his administration, but it didn't come cheap. the estimated cost of the two month standoff so far? >> just shy of a million dollars overall from day one. >> reporter: and those costs continued to mount today with police out in force on foot, on motorcycles, even or horseback. but once again, when "occupy" protestors took over market
