martha: that really, kirsten, is the battle the gop is having. timid approach or bold approach work? newt gingrich would label romney's approach as timid and are we seeing that to some extent in the numbers coming out to support him in these early caucuses? >> no, i don't think it has anything to do with romney's approach. he actually previously was beating obama in matchups or was tied with obama in matchups and what has happened, if you look, there has been a series of polls shown him dropping among independents. he was beating obama among independents by about 10 points in most polls and what's happened is newt gingrich attacks on him have taken a real to and his response to them frankly has taken a real to, particularly taxes issue hurt him in this poll, the "abc news/washington post poll" that they showed something like 2/3 of people believe that the tax rate that romney pays is unfair. so i think that has taken a toll. and then the bain attacks i think also taken a toll among independents. they generally don't like the nastiness. democrats

kirsten, what say you? >> when somebody brings up theology and refers to the bible it is a little hard to believe they're not questioning his christianity. i saw some explanation of it that he was talking about radical environmentalists. i don't really see that. so i think that it was out of bounds, even if it was about radical environmentalists, the president is not a radical environmentalists by any stretch of the imagination. julie: yeah. >> so, yeah, it is definitely out of bounds for a presidential candidate to say something like this. julie: let's hear from mr. santorum himself. he says he was not. let's take a listen. >> accept the fact that the president is a christian. i just said that when you have a world view that elevates the earth above man and says that, we can't take those resources pause we're going to harm the earth, by things that are frankly are just not scientifically proven, for example, the politicization of the whole global warming debate, this is all an attempt to, you know, central

kirsten, what do you think? is this the best way we have to come up with for a candidate to run as president? >> as voters democrats did it this way last time. i think it is better. there is more time. it isn't just the person who is sort of the inevitable candidate who has the institutional support and the money that can sort of knockout the early states and winner take all and move on. i think it's good to have it be protracted and have people have to battle for it. if you are the republican party and you are looking at the situation, i don't think it is good if it gets nasty or personal which it has been. i think that is actually harming romney. i don't think the fact that having to compete for it harms romney at all i think he has become a much better candidate. but the nastiness and stuff that is coming up that gingrich is getting under his skin about is harming him with independent voters now. in that sense it could be a negative. >> cal, the other night after his win in florida mitt romney said that compe

kirsten, the president decided he wants to appeal to his base on this issue. will that be successful for him do you think. >> i actually don't think he decided to appeal to the base. i think he was trying with this compromise or whatever you want to call it he is trying to first of all appeal to balancing religious liberty concerns. there are a lot of progressive catholic who is are upset including high-profile supporters of his who supported health care reform. i think he was trying to really reach out to a bunch of broader group of people than just his base with this decision. martha: tony, what do you think? how does this play for the president politically? >> look if this conversation remains about contraception the president obviously wins. this accommodation to kirsten's point was really more satisfying those who didn't like how the policy looked, not what the policy actually did. the policy will still in some way force catholic institutions to pay higher premiums in insurance to cover the cost of the contraception. what the republicans and catholic bish
