[ applause ] we also took great strides this year to protect our most vulnerable citizens. elder abuse is the fastest growing crime in michigan. the senate passed bills which give vulnerable adults special witness protection against abusers, allow advocates to speak on their behalf when they are unable to and establish a senior alert program. i urge the house to move the package of bills to my desk for signature. [ applause ] michigan is home to nearly 700,000 men and women who have served this country. many have access to va health care but are unaware or choose not to use it because of a cumbersome process. today, only 19% of our veterans use va health care. we will continue to work with veterans groups and the federal

so this is my little map of michigan. what i just wanted to quickly show you was the west side of the state is usually conservative republicans. those are social conservatives often. the east side of the state detroit, this is lancing in the middle, but this whole corridor right here is around the i-75 corridor. that's the economic conservatives. that's where romney will probably do well. up here and in the upper peninsula of michigan, again more conservative. this is where santorum is going to do well. you recall that michigan's primary is going to be based upon congressional districts. it's not a winner take all but every congressional district has two delegates. the one who wins the most con congressional districts will be the one who wins the area. david joins us from downtown of detroit woodward and jefferson. thank you for joining us. what are you hearing what is the sense on the ground. >> well, governor granholm, there is a sense from the romney campaign that they're going to have their get out the photo operation

we begin with some of the comments of mitt romney in michigan. >> is michigan proving a little bit more difficult than you expect? >> about ten days or ago or two weeks aago i was down 13 points in michigan. right for you it looks like too close to call. i don't think the pollster know what will happen. we can't be 100% sure what will happen. the fact we made up 15 points in two weeks is really extraordinary. i'm also pleased that our debate went very well, i think, when senator santorum said he's taking one for the team. that pointed out that the practices of washington are very different than the kind of rhetoric you hear on a campaign. i think the american people want someone that will do something that's right for america, not just taking one for the team. i think the hardest thing about predicting what will happen today is whether senator santorum's effort to call democrat households and tell them to come out and vote against mitt romney is going to be successful or not. i think republicans have to recognize there's a real effort to kidnap our primary process. if we want republican

and his ties to michigan. it's where romney launched his campaign four years ago. he beats john mccain in the state of the primary four years ago. it is a significant fire wall. now, in fairness to romney, he's won all the fire walls so far. so when he's been pushed up against a wall, he's won, he showed he's still out there, he's still alive. but you know, i've been doing some -- excuse me, research on this with my team going back to 2002. one of the things that mitt romney as a candidate was talking about there was defining himself for voters, doing a better job of that because he was worried about being defined by his opposition. that was a decade ago. and that's part of the connection problem he's having right now. and part of the other side to lawrence's point. if you look at his biography, political biography, professional biography, his values as a person, i'm talking about mitt romney here, there's every reason to believe that he's highly qualified to be president of the united states. and yet his big

in michigan, it was an outright depression. it was the worst i've ever seen and i grew up in the streets of detroit. people see the positive difference now. people are going back to work in michigan with good paying jobs will people are able to go back to school now and they are able to afford it. the white house -- i'll share this with you. the president has been working behind the scenes helping people. right now the white house is working on an initiative to train metro detroiters for jobs already available in the michigan but go unfilled, information technology space, because we don't have the people trained for that. he's doing that now. that's going to train people for over 3,000 jobs. to be filled immediately. once they see what he's doing and know the president's the cause of the great things happening in the economy, no doubt they will vote for him. >> represents metro detroit area. >> yes. >> norman up first a democrat in albany, new york. this investment would help bring it back. if you remember those three executive
