we have to do well here in kansas. we have to win here in kansas. and win big. >> and so the campaigning continues one day after super tuesday, which in past presidential primaries, kind of a benchmark into where we're going, coalescing often around a card date. we saw that with john mccain. all four candidates vowing to stay in the race. the next focus will be kansas this weekend. next week, two southern primaries in mississippi and alabama. welcome to hour two of "washington today" on c-span radio. mitt romney's campaign raised $11.5 million in the month of february, comparing that to about $9 million for rick santorum's efforts. you get a sense these two candidates are going to battle it out the next couple of months. in other news today, the pentagon saying that the suggestion by senator john mccain for u.s. air strikes in syria will not work. that was the message delivered earlier today by the defense secretary leon panetta, as well as the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, general john dempsey. senator mccain questions how long the world s

kansas declaring a winner. rick santorum sweeping the state's caucuses as the candidates slug it out in fight for the republican nomination. welcome to a brand-new hour inside america's news headquarters. >> heather: i'm heather childers. associated press is report weigh 88% of the precincts reporting. rick santorum has won the state with 53% following behind mitt romney with this percentage, 17%. newt gingrich, 16% and ron paul coming in with 13%. another big contest, of course, the wyoming caucuses with 44% in mitt romney leading so far, 47% and rick santorum with 34% followed by ron paul with 7%. so far no percentage in yet for newt gingrich. to break it all down we'll go to alicia in wichita, kansas. >> reporter: i talked to rick santorum. he says he feels good about what happened in kansas. he did come into the race among the favorite. they wanted someone that reflects that values. >> here is what santorum told me about that. >> i'm being attacked by my opponents in mississippi and alabama, as not being a

kansas takes the spotlight in the republican race today. cnn is projecting that rick santorum has won the kansas caucuses. here's the totals here, check them out with nearly all the caucus votes counted, santorum won easily there. he has 51%. romney has a distant second at 21%. kansas is a conservative state with a strong evangelical vote, both playing to santorum's strengths. we bring in chief political correspondent candy crowley joining us live from washington. big picture here, romney and gingrich pretty much let santorum have kansas so his luck holds here. is this an important win? >> you know, i hate to sound like everybody else but the fact of the matter is they're all important wins at this point. this is probably important for santorum. he does pick up, we think he'll pick up the bulk of the delegate and if the numbers you just showed hold, romney will be the only other one in the bunch if he stays 20% or above he'll be the only one that gets any delegates out of kansas. what this does is it sets rick santorum up for what he wants

but that town in eastern kansas does have the story past. just a little over 100 years ago on august 31st, 1910, former president theodore roosevelt mounted a kitchen table on the grounds of the 22-acre state park. he was helping to dedicate john brown state park and delivered what has gone down in history as his new nationalism speech. it certainly wouldn't have gone down in history as his john brown speech since the fiery abolitionist who h battled pro-slavery raiders on that spot in the days of bloody kansas snagged only two cursory mentioned in t.r.'s speech, much to the relief of his advisers i should add who knew that t.r. was one of those politicians who also regarded himself as something of a historian, although the corporations of the day weren't about to pay him fo. it would be described as george mowrey as, quote, the most radical speech ever given by an ex-president. his concepts of by which a powerful federal government could regulate and use private property in the interest of the whole and his declarations about labor and view

you heard a moment ago rick santorum on the campaign trail in kansas. mitt romney from boston appearing on cnbc's "squawk box" this morning. >> historically slow and teddy wins the race. you won more states again last night, more delegates. you got a nice lead in overall delegates. i don't know if you've seen it this morning, governor, 89/9 for you to be the nominee. what's your level of confidence? is it 90 up or down from 89.9? >> i don't apply percentages to it. i must admit after last night, i feel pretty darn good. we had a strong response across the country. from alaska to vermont. we got terrific support from some of the most conservative leaders, john ashcroft, eric cant cantor, we're getting the support i need to become the nominee. i'm encouraged. >> you're hearing all the murmuring. what's your plan to energize the whole party, all the different factions of the party if you do become the nominee? >> well, we do, of course, have other candidates in the race that have great qualities and are appealing to their respective constituent sis. ron pa

in the midwest. >> can you give us any more thoughts on kansas? >> awesome win. feeling great. >> reporter: the santorum campaign is going one step further. hogan, who is santorum's national communications director said, "this is a great win for the campaign and further evidence that conservatives and tea party loyalists are uniting behind rick as the true consistent conservative in this race." the santorum campaign certainly hopes that's the case as they move ahead. look ahead towards tuesday's contest in mississippi and alabama. they certainly hope to do well there, although there are some polls suggesting that santorum has an uphill climb. one other thing of note. hawaii also has a contest on tuesday and santorum is sending his he wouldest daughter, elizabeth, there to campaign. shannon travis, cnn, overland park, kansas. >> here's the current delegate count. mitt romney won the most delegates this past week, but the magic number a candidate needs to win the presidential nomination is 1,144. here's the breakdown. mitt romney needs 686 more dele
