i mean, putting forward these artists as barry gordy described. he was a kind of wedge figure in a way. people talk about there was this kind of white bread quality to american bandstand, but that's really missings larger point. introducing these people in a way that really made it seem like what's the big deal. if you think about other figure somebody like rick nelson or ed sullivan functioned in a similar way. they made something that had an important edge seem like something that was acceptable and eventually it became acceptable. >> mr. gordy, the thing that also struck me and i'm hearing it in your voice is how people would still be personally close with him. seemed like everyone felt like he engaged them personally and liked him personally, which was not always the case in the music world. >> dick clark was a master at that, at making people feel important and talking directly to them. i mean, i thought i was one of his very, very best friends and of course i was because i loved next door and we would talk. and he was just so gracious. but w

and the legendary barry gordy and the hit behind that song and many more. mr. gordy, thanks so much for being with us. what are your thoughts about the impact that dick had on the music industry? >> first of all i am so saddened and devastated over the loss. i heard about it this morning and i just could not get myself together for a while. dick and i were friends for over 50 years. and i was -- you know, i was from detroit and he was from philly and we wound up being next door neighbors in malibu, california for a long time. to we had a lot of time together and i knew him just very well and what he did for music was just beyond even explanation. and what he did for me personally, was the same way. the act that i had on the show, if it were not for dick clark, i do not believe motown would have been the company it was. >> because he was willing to put so many african-american artists on the air, and his program was integrated, black people and white people in the audience dancing? >> well, i don't think he really, you know, it was just kind of what he was and i

(inaudible) i am overwhelmed with sadness. and dick clark, of course, is one of the greatest pioneers in the music business and certainly through dick bear d bearers came down. he was a life saber for me, personally, when he played my first record on the air and i heard it for the first time after turning on a local radio station and jockey -- jackie wilson was playing it and it was on the dick clark slow and i got the biggest thrill in my life. from dick. >>stuart: that is a memory. >>guest: a big memory. he carried on. and many other memories. (inaudible) they had a new record "where did our love go," starting at the bottom of the chart with dick's show and at the end of the caravan stars they were number one. so, to say dick was important to me is a major unstatement. this guy became great friends throughout his whole career and i lived next door to him in mall but for much of that time. >>stuart: so
