i'm joined tonight by bernie sanders, independent senator from vermont. senator, good to have you with us tonight. this is one of these stories that i think i have to tell maybe every three weeks or once a month before the election. because i'm hearing on the radio, well, gosh, i didn't know that stamps pay for everything. i'm hearing on the radio, well, i didn't know about this 75-year thing into a ten-year window. no business could do that. so i ask you, senator, what is congress going to do? what do you think they should do to reverse all of this? >> well, there's a lot we should do. the original plan, as you indicated, ed, that came from the post master general, would have shut down 3,700 rural post offices, which would have been devastating to rural america. i mean, many, many small towns exist around their post office. so it really would have been a terrible thing. the post master general originally wanted to shut down half of the processing plants in america, about 250 of them. all told, he wanted to shrink the workforce by over 200,000 workers in

. >> we start with a friend of the show, bernie sanders. senator, what is the legal protection that allows individuals who attend meetings like this to work as financial professionals at subsidized banks that have federal bank charters and yet the american taxpayer who pays for the whole thing even years after, we still can't get real transparency from the organization and the administration that claims to be so? >> well, dylan,ly -- i will tell you we are currently working on a group of economists reform bill. clearly the issue of conflict of interest is huge, and the issue of transparency is huge. the american people have a right to know what's going on, they have a right to know that people who are working for the fed are working for the best interests of ordinary americans, and when they leave the fed, they're not going to go out and make a whole lot of money with the information they have obtained. so there is a lot of work that has to be done in terms of transparency, in terms of openness, in terms of ending conflicts of interest, and

do the democrats have a messaging problem all of a sudden on this bernie sanders tell me, there's war on women. we got to keep talking about it. what do you think? >> i think democrats have lost a bit of their cool this week, to be honest. i don't think the obama campaign should have responded about the hilary rosen air fair in the way they did. not because she said things that's just fine. she's not associated with them. the president had the best response which is that spouses are off limits. he knows it because his spouse has come under ridiculous and painful fire. in any case, democrats need to stick to the policy questions. there are pocketbook questions that women care about. there's also fundamental rights questions that are coming under attack just in arizona where you see abortion procedures coming under fire again. that is not an abstract debate anymore. i don't know that it helps republicans to keep the conversation on this. they need be talking about who can run the economy better. not who speaks for women better because they always lost that by 19 points. >> we got to run
