the people of california are ready to end the death penalty. a couple of weeks ago we were able to do a poll on the question of the governor converting all of these 713 death sentences to life without possibility of parole, and a change would save the city california $1 billion in five years. 63% of the voters support this idea across the entire state. every region of the state had a majority of support. a majority of republicans and democratic voters support this idea. 63%, ready for the governor to take everyone off of death row. this is an important change from where we used to be on this issue, because for a very long time, politicians have been afraid to talk about reasons for ending the death penalty and this has been seen -- been seen as an issue that would run political careers, as the former district attorney has shown, the death penalty is no longer of liability and the voters are ready for candidates who will say that we need smart criminal- justice policy, to keep the community safe and that will hold the offenders accountable, and

this is not the case for all its children in california. one in four children are growing up in poverty. they do not have health care, and they are struggling along with parents. they do not have summer camps. they do not have family travel together, and it is that differential hurting the success of kids and creating a great achievement gap that should be there. it is wrong morally, and it is wrong for the future of our economy. we formed a team that look at the top issues. we noted deaths middle-income kids of low-income kids learn in the school year of about the same rate -- we noted middle income kids of low-income kids learn in the school year of about the same state. -- rate. during the summer middle income kids keep learning in their own environment, but low income kids go down, and that widens the achievement gap, so by eighth grade we have many students seeing that drop accumulate to maybe being a dropout statistics. they get behind and feel they are not as good as other students. we need to have them continue that learning. this i

under the state of california. i thing there is only 21 or so organized as california organizations under the california corporation code as benefit corporations. there are many more b corporations, and these third- party vera fires certify companies as b corporations, even though they are not certified benefit corporations. so there are out a large number of those, but the standards upon which they are based are buried. that is why supervisor chu said to make sure that these a california corporation never benefit corporations organized under the california corporation code, rather than what is being termed as a b corporation. those are two different things. the point is well taken. we did not know how many of these corporations will become benefit corporations in the future years. supervisor chu: i understand there might be a difference between what you find on google and what is actually certified by the state. given that it is relatively new , and now we would expect additional companies to join in, we do not kn

it is a foreclosure crisis in california, a crisis of compliance. what it does is we have a city agency that is taking a very close look at what is happening around foreclosures. it is an important report that looks at a sample of about 382 loans and foreclosure is out of the much larger number of foreclosures that took place in the city and county of san francisco. 382 reviewed by the report. the findings of this reports are very disturbing. in a very short moment, we will hear directly from -- to speak about the specifics of this report. what the report concludes is that we have a crisis. if you look at the number -- at these loans that were scrutinized by the reports, it there are a number of problems that are identified in terms of compliance with the legal requirements that are in place to protect homeowners. unless something changes and we do something in response to this, we find ourselves in a situation where a number of people have their legal rights and interest being trampled upon. i am very grateful for calling for this report. i know th

supervisor chu: if a corporation registered with california, it is a requirement to be a california-based company? >> there is not a requirement to be a california-based company, but you need to get this agreement with the state. supervisor chu: so we could be registered with california but it may not be a california benefit corporation? >> correct. again, that is why it was important for us to make sure we have protection for our local san francisco businesses that i described before. supervisor chu: i appreciate that. i know both your office and ours has worked hard to make sure that we have additional lbe programs available, in particular for micro businesses. the one area where i am still concerned about this legislation from a fundamental point of view, what the legislation would do, we are conferring an economic benefit to a corporation which does the necessarily have a benefit there confirm back to the city and county of san francisco, so we are saying, if you are a registered corporation, registered with the state of california, regardless of whether you are in or out of the state
