stan grant is joining us from beijing, good morning, stan. chen arrived at the beijing airport today was the timing unexpected? >> reporter: took us by prize and a lot of other media as well, suddenly heard chen was at the airport, spoken to people saying he had arrived there without a passport. he appeared his family ready to fly to new york for the new life in the united states. apparently chinese officials were holding documentation with them until they cleared immigration and security this is a dramatic twist, a cliche but this does read like a hollywood script. blind activist escapes house arrest, flees to the u.s. embassy, diplomatic stand off between china and united states, finally china gives him the passport, now on his way to the united states. he can't stay in china, fears for his life here in recent days, said his family, who have pen left behind, brother, nephews, extended family have been arrested, beaten. his nephew placed on attempted murder charge for defending himself against these attacks. not the environment he felt safe

stan's the only one to talk to him. what can the u.s. do, and if we don't do anything, does it show we don't have any power or control in china? >> first of all, no american administration can make china or any other country do what they want to their own citizens. what's new here and i think is good news for those of us who care about human rights is for about ten years now, human rights has been off the agenda between the united states and china. republicans, democrats, it's no longer a big debate in congress the way it used to be. congress used to threaten to cut off trade with china because of issues like individual dissidents. that era has passed. so this tragedy for mr. chen has brought human rights way up the agenda for the united states and china. what i think will happen realistically is secretary of state clinton and the president, when he's in contact with their counterparts, will now be raising mr. chen's case time after time and making sure that they bring up his name in conversations, asking about him, say we're still watch

let's go live now to stan grant, who's been following this story from beijing. stan, what do you know so far? >> reporter: yeah, you can add to that senior u.s. official, you can also add to that chinese state media. now remember, andrew, that this has befr benever been reported. ever since chen guangcheng fled last week after 18 months on house arrest, that has never been reported in state media. that has all changed in the last few minutes. xinhua, state-run media, is now confirming this. chen has left the embassy of his own volition, and they're demanding the u.s. apologize to china for one of its citizens being allowed to enter the u.s. embassy in beijing. so china taking a tough line here, saying to the u.s. you should never have harbored chen guangche guangcheng, but also confirming that chen guangcheng has left the embassy voluntarily. we're hearing reports that he's been taken to a medical facility in beijing, where he's getting treatment, but also crucially being reunited with his family. remember chen guangcheng has been suffering ill health for some t

cnn's stan grant is in the chinese capital. stan, let's go ahead and clear up some confusion about chen's willingness to leave his safe haven at the u.s. embassy. we've received conflicting reports. can you straighten this out for us? >> reporter: yeah. this has been an extraordinary story, you know. it's taken so many twists and turns. we heard today that chen guangcheng who escaped house arrest about a week ago has been holed up in the u.s. embassy pretty much ever since, left the embassy of his own volition, went to a hospital, was getting medical treatment and reunited with his family that a deal had been worked out between the u.s. and china for him to leave as a free man and a safe man along with his family. we're now seeing cracks in that, and that agreement is not even yet cast in stone. we're hearing from a very close friend of chen who has been posting on twitter and also confirmed with cnn that she had a conversation with chen and chen's family was being threatened if he did not leave. the threats were if he did not
