matt ackland has the latest drama. matt. >> reporter: many people are saying this is the last thing the mayor needs. this is the last thing that the people at city hall need, but the mayor, a couple of hours ago, stepped up and said he supports the nomination of michael kelly to the department of housing and community development. currently, kelly has been nominated but the council has to offer its approval as well. at issue are the number of media reports where kelly is the director of housing there. he was having sexual relations with someone who worked for him. the media reports claim he may have given that employee larger raises. mayor gray said that kelly admitted to the sexual affair but with was cleared of any other wrongdoing by the department of housing and urban development. that is important for people to remember that kelly was successful in his position for nine years as a director of the housing authority here in d.c. >> michael had a very, very successful career here in the city. i worked closely with mi

fox 5's matt ackland explains. >> i served this city for over seven years. i love this city. >> reporter: leaving federal court after he admitted guilt to bank fraud, the former chairman of the d.c. council made an emotional speech. >> six years ago i made some very serious mistakes in judgment and i have taken full and so he responsibility for those mistakes. >> reporter: brown admitted to committing bank fraud twice years ago, the fur on a home equity loan application, the -- the first on a home equity loan application, the other on a home equity loan to buy a boat. on the home loan he created a fake position with a company to indicate he was making more money. on the boat loan he changed numbers on a 1099 tax income form from a real job at a consulting company. he changed his income from 35,000 to 85,000 by changing the 3 to 8. >> those decisions and actions should not have occurred. one of the consequences of those decisions is my resignation as chairman of the council of the district of columbia. mbia. >> reporter: later in the day brown pleaded guilty

matt ackland caught up with council member brown today. what can you tell us? >> reporter: he was basically looking over the books when he noticed the money missing and he tells us he called the police right away. they launched an investigation to see if someone was embezzling -- embezzling from the campaign. councilman brown is seeking re- election this year. just months before going to the polls, brown discovered something wrong when looking at his campaign financial records. >> i noticed that some things didn't look right or seem right and through further discovery, found out something was wrong. >> reporter: how much money is he talking about? he wouldn't be specific. >> way too early to know now. everyone's doing the calculations. >> reporter: brown said that he doesn't know who took the money but confirmed he fired his campaign treasurer since. >> we e-mailed him that he was no longer with the campaign and asked him to return some equipment and materials. i am disappointed. clearly, someone's been around my campaign for quite some time, so i'm disappointe

. >> all right, matt ackland, thank you very much. >>> another big story we're following. d.c. police arrested three robbery suspects in a classic sting operation. a team of undercover cops convinced the men they were being recruited for the job. the guns, mask, getaway car and target location would be spreeed. paul wagner is in the newsroom with this one. paul? >> reporter: d.c. police and the fbi used male and female undercover officers to pose as band its with a valuable prize. telling the men that a woman having an affair with a liquor store owner was willing to give him up. the setup began here at this restaurant on georgia avenue where the undercover officers laid out their plan for the first time. it was june 10th and, according to the affidavit, marshal and boyd said they were interested and mentioned committing robberies in the past. two days later, the undercovers and defendants met up again in this southeast neighborhood where they were driven to a secret location. while being recorded, began planning the job marshal and boyd said they would need 9s, a common term fo
