now, aurora is about ten miles from denver, colorado. and there are 36 people injured, we are told now, according to police. this just a horrific scene there in aurora, colorado, as people who were just going to a movie screening were told by witnesses that there were children there. this was a pg-13 movie. children there with their families and a gunman stormed the theater and just opened fire. 14 people dead. it is unclear at this time if there were any additional shooters. police continue to gather information there on the scene and we do here as well at msnbc. kusa is our affiliate there that you're looking at live coverage of. we were listening to some of the reporters there giving the eyewitness accounts of what was happening. dozens of police officers, dozens of witnesses streaming out, giving their terrifying accounts of what happened inside that theater. 14 dead, 36 injured there in aurora, colorado. and right here on msnbc, we are going to continue our coverage of this mass shooting, a horrific event. with my colleague, willie

that update will be at aurora city hall. okay. thank you very much. >> so that was the news conference from aurora, colorado, where early this morning during the screening of the brand new "batman" movie, the new numbers that we have now according to aurora police is that 71 people were shot. 12 people confirmed dead right now. and we've been listening mostly to dan oates, who is the chief of police in aurora. spent 21 years at the new york police department. he couldn't give us much new information quite frankly except confirming the weapons that the suspect had on him at the time of this brutal and heinous attack. we also heard from the colorado governor who said our hearts are broken. the act that happened early this morning was apparently the act of what he described as a deranged mind. we're going to go to pete williams right now. he's been on this case since very, very early this morning. pete, what more can you tell us right now? >> well, i guess there are three places where this investigation is going on. still at the thea

what's the atmosphere like in aurora? >> reporter: it is very somber here in aurora. in fact, buckley air force is only a mile away. today police chief dan oats and the mayor of aurora was on hand. they were here today to greet the president. they went with him as they were meeting with family member. the mayor of aurora said it certainly means a lot that the president cares. the president's stay here in colorado is a short one. 2.5 hours. does not appear he will make any public appearances to address what happened. we can tell you that the president is wanting to meet with them very privately. he does not want any media there. maybe the white house press photographer there. that's it. the president really wants to meet with the families. he said he did not want to stay here for the vigil. he wanted the community to heal. >> i was going to ask you, what do you know about the vigil? how many folks will be there? >> reporter: the city of aurora actually put this vigil together. it was a way for them to get the entire community to come out to talk about what they're feel

the aurora mall in aurora, colorado. as we told you, the century 16 movie theater. theater number nine specifically. this is just a few miles outside of denver. the suspect was found in the parking lot behind the theater in his car. and here is a chopper shot of the suspect's apartment complex in north aurora. not far from the theater, just a couple of miles, we understand. that building has been evacuated this morning while police search for possible explosives because apparently the suspect told officers that there might be explosives in that unit. but none so far have been found. aurora police tell cnn that one man is in custody, and that there is no evidence of a second shooter. here is what we can tell you about that suspected shooter right now. the gunman is a 24-year-old white male. he was wearing a bulletproof vest, a mask, covering most of his face, except for his eyes, according to eyewitnesss, and carrying four guns in all. one of which federal officials describe as an assault rifle. the same officials also say the suspect deployed tear gas just before fi

he lives in aurora. investigators are searching his apartment at this hour, looking for explosives because he told them that he might have explosives in his home and his car. police are expected to hold a news conference a little later this morning. but so far, aurora's police chief says there is no evidence of any additional shooters, and the fbi says there's no indication the incident is tied to any terrorist organization. >> we've talked to a lot of witnesses this morning who have designed an absolutely terrifying scene. a man who was at the front right of the theater came in right near the right-hand part of the screen, fired something into the air, and then opened fire on the crowd. according to investigators and our own pete williams, he was heavily armed with at least four weapons on him in addition to the tear gas, he was wearing a gas mask, dressed in all black and appeared to have a bulletproof vest. >> a lot of questions because according to just about every eyewitness, he came in through an e
