i am an israeli and i served 21 years in the israeli defense department. my father was an air navigator in the israeli air force. i was born and raised in israeli army bases. i was drafted into the israeli army the day i was born. the bases were always surrounded by guards. i was allowed to be independent from a young age. the experience of growing up on army bases was also speckled with fear. fathers and friends around me died or were injured. i had a terrifying feeling that something horrible might happen to my own father. as a young girl, i remember looking out the window of our small house and every officer who used to pass by killed me with terror that he might take the right turn and go on the pathway leading to my house, not on the door, and give me some horrible news. that not never came. it did make me realize in an innocent, childlike way, that the only way i could save my dad would be by creating peace. i used to think to myself, if only i had the chance to talk to people -- the palestinians and explain to them that we are actually good people.
