e oraptioning sponsored by cbs this is the "cbs evening news" bs eh scott pelley. >> schieffer: good evening, scott is off tonight, i'm bob ishieffer. fll, we may be headed for the worst summer ever for wildfires, and there is a huge new fire burning tonight east of seattle. about 40,000 fires so far this year have burned up more than six million acres. that's a million more than average. there are more than 60 large fires burning out of control tonight. the fire east of seattle swept across a 26,000 acre patch in a matter of hours. ben tracy is there tonight. u n? >> reporter: as you can see, the smoke is darkening the hillsides in western washington state and the wind isn't helping firefighters. they've been trying to battle the blaze for a day and a half gow and they're doing all they can just to keep up. overnight the fire exploded driven by nearly 40 mile per hour winds. re this is one of the homes we saw over there that's clearly on fire. >> reporter: at least 60 homes en and around this town have been swallowed by walls of llame. 500 people have been forced to leave their home

captioning funded by cbs >> this is the "cbs morning news" for monday, august 20, 2012. >>> good morning everybody. good to be with you. i'm terrell brown. this morning northern california is once again reacting to flames burning out of control. the record heat and dry weather this summer created optimum conditions for wildfire. thousands of people in a rural area east of redding have been told to leave their homes as a fire nearly 19 square miles continues to grow. the ponderosa fire has been -- has destroyed at least seven others. >>> firefighters would rather rip down these trees than allow them to burn. they spent sunday trying to establish a fire line to keep the flames from reaching a cluster of homes. >> this fire's path is directly headed towards many of these homes. our number one goal is to get them out and get your firefighters in to put this fire out. >> the fire started saturday morning. the cause hasn't been determined. but it started after a series of lightning strikes in the area. >> this has been a fast moving fire due to the fact that conditions are dry, the brush, the

here at cbs news. david, tell us about the storm's path and the timing. >> well, certainly everybody wants to know about that track, scott, and they want to know how strong the storm is going to be. so let's look at what is steering the storm. we have a big blocking high. that's driving isaac to the west right now through caribbean but this jet stream dip, that is going to be key over the next several days because that is going to open up an alleyway over florida or the gulf of mexico and that is going to turn isaac to the north. and where that occurs will have a big determination in just how strong the storm can be and also exactly where it's going to go so as you said, all of florida is in a threat, even parts of the gulf coast and, for that matter, we can't rule out portions of the east coast as well. >> pelley: well, the republican meeting begins in tampa on monday. what are the chances the storm would strike around there on monday and how big a storm? how powerful a storm could it be? >> well, the
