in fact, we're only on our fifth named storm, which is ernesto. usually we're way through more of these names by the time we get into early august, but we're beginning to approach the peak part of the season. today about 5:00 the hurricane center said that a tropical depression they had been watching in the far eastern atlantic has indeed become tropical storm ernesto. there was a hurricane hunter in it today. they found winds of 50 miles an hour and that's its current strength as it is now about 135 miles east of barbados. so where does it go next and what is the long term forecast? the national hurricane center has the red track in the middle. what we're showing you here are all the other models and the projections for the center of circulation. forecast to become a hurricane potentially by monday. clearly the yucatan of mexico will have to watch it and a couple models bring it into the gulf of mexico which is mighty warm. ernesto will need to be watched, a few days before it gets to peak strength and a while before our temperatures come down, t

tropical storm ernesto has formed in the alatlantic. it is expected to zip across the caribbean, possibly on its way to the gulf of mexico. rob marciano has been tracking this for us. is this going to be a fierce one? >> we have to wait and see. right now places like barbados getting rainfall, and st lush ya. 45 miles per hour winds, westerly at 24 miles per hour. it will shoot through the caribbean. it's not exactly conducive for this thing to explode into a category 3 or 4 hurricane. it will be slow to develop but has a lot of real estate to work with as it does so. the thinking is eventually it will be gaining some strength, probably not going to run into significant landfall for the next four orive days. so with that in mind, category 1 storm is not out of the question by the time we gets toward the end of the weekend and beginning next week. jamaica, cayman islands getting into the yucatan straits and maybe gulf of mexico by next week. that's a reason for concern for everybody that lives across the southeast and certainly in mexico
