. >>> and developing news for northern california, a wildfire is burning out of control. tonight, thousands are forced out of their homes. >>> and a giant issue? we're learning what giants melky cabrera was cooking up to avoid a game suspension. >> nbc bay area news starts now. >>> good evening, diane dwyer has the night off. we begin with breaking news in the south bay tonight where a man is fighting for his life after police say he was shot near the intersection of east san antonio street and king road. police say the victim is being treated for potentially life-threatening injuries. the suspect is on the loose, and police are investigating the motive. it is a cause that is becoming all too familiar for police in san jose, where the day began into the investigation of the city's fourth homicide in less than a week. nbc's bay area kimberly terry has more on the deadly shooting and the rash of violence and how people are feeling tonight. hi, kim. >> reporter: hi, chris, san jose police won't say it is part of an upward trend in violence, but they are saying whether or not

well, it is fire season in northern california, and fire crews around our state have their hands full tonight with wild fires burning across thousands of acres of land. kal fire is reporting more than a dozen fires statewide including several here. the past fires scorched. it started on saturdays and less than 10% contained. >> burned through more than 15 thousand acres. more than 1200 firefighters around the scene fighting in flames and rugged terrain. the ponderosa fire also started saturday after a series of lightening strikes. thousands of homes are said to be threatened with sen structures already destroyed. ed ifs from the bay area are sending backup to help firefighters up north. two teams from oakland will be joining the efforts tomorrow. right now only five out of the nine bay area counties has the capacity to send the full strike team out of town. >> collectively as a whole for the bay area assigned to fires that are in northern california is approximately 300. that doesn't include the orders that are in today being shifted around through the state listen for additional reso

. >>> in northern california tonight, more than 2,000 firefighters are working a dangerous, unpredictable fire that started this past weekend. some of them, along with our own correspondent miguel almaguer, found themselves in the path of monstrous flames today when the edge of the fire made a fast run right at them, at the worst possible time. miguel reports tonight from the fire line. >> reporter: exploding across forest land, moving towards homes, northern california's ponderosa fire blew up this afternoon. >> coming hot and hard. >> reporter: firefighters scrambled, 50 structures have been destroyed, 240 more threatened. with help from a steady air attack and aggressive push on the ground, crews have contained half this blaze. but flair-ups forced firefighters to retreat. breeding on dry forest land for five days now, this fire continues to make runs. crews are worried the next one will be into a neighborhood. this afternoon the mountain town of mineral was placed under voluntary evacuation. at this christian campground, most of the 200 people are seniors. >> if you do have to leave,
