south africa riot killing at least a dozen men. the shooting happened at the lonmin marikana mine, not far from johannesburg. the scenes of how the regime dealt with protests. >> trouble at the mine had been brewing for days. weapons drawn and already used. dispute over the wages. we work hard, this miner said, but we can't afford to send our kids to school. all we want is money. we are not fighting anybody. thousands of south africans who worked in the mine had been fighting between rival unions. 10 of them, police and miners dead. the police tried to break up the protest. >> we asked them to leave, but then i don't want to explain to you if you they don't want this. what i told you today we are ending this matter. >> the police had first used water cannons and teargas to try to break up the crowds. but then with machetes approaching them, a barrage of gunfire. a lot of soul searching is going on here in south africa. at this point, suzanne, no real sense there's any resolution to this violent strike. >> david, you say that the president, president zuma, is actually calling for some sort of investigation or inquiry. is there a feeling among the people that you talk to there that somebody will be held accountability for what happened? >> reporter: at this point, no. they're very skeptical of president zuma's calls which is interesting in itself. i think we're seeing a sea change in some of the attitudes amongst south africans, particularly poor south africans who feel democracy hasn't brought them the gains they had hoped for. people i spoke to on the mines were very skeptical of what the government could offer. some of them even calling for an independent international inquestiinqu inquiry saying the government, made up of leaders, who are some of them part of the strikes and part of the protest actions during apartheid, they say they don't trust them. so a lot of politics is going on here as well.
