steve brown live from tampa with more on what is going on at the convention. >> reporter: yeah, very common for conventiongoers, to get a little gift bag in their hotel room, welcome, maybe a few ups. this year's will include how to deal with a hurricane if one should come your way, courtesy of the governor. they are taking this seriously, although it is not believed yet that the hurricane is headed in this direction. at the minimum heavy rains and high winds are expected monday, tuesday in the city when the convention gets going. otherwise, preparations are going as well as they could go. finishing touches put on the convention hall, as we saw this morning. the balloons are up, signs up for individual states, monitors are up, all screens up, everything ready to go. however, they have other preparations make, that is for protesters. in 2008 in st. paul there was a large and well-organized protest group. we are told that 5,000 people will be hitting the streets monday in tampa to make their voices heard about what they don't like about this gathering. the mayor of this city is wonderi

steve brown live with more. steve? >> hey there. mitt romney doesn't like to talk a lot about producing energy, american energy. we're going to be talking about coal today. it's not been the best of times for the coal industry, according to the energy department of figures. coal production is down in a couple of key battle ground states, ohio being one of them. pennsylvania being the other. and coal jobs are off. down slightly from 2009 to 2010. if you're wondering why that might be, well, the natural gas explosion here in this country, the exploration production of that has really put a crimp in coal. also there have been additional regulations put in place by the epa that the coal industry has strongly not been fond of. and on this note, the romney campaign is taking aim. we expect the candidate to be speaking about it saying in ohio and around the nation, the president's energy policies have resulted in fewer jobs and higher costs. as president mitt romney will reverse president obama's disasterous policies. on the other side on

steve brown is live in oak creek. steve, we hear someone else is also in custody. what's this all about? >> we understand that perhaps a girlfriend might also have been arrested by authorities. we believe in connection with the shooting yesterday. what we know about wade michael page, our justice department producer was able to pry up a good job doing it, is that this gentleman served some time at fort bragg, that he was found to have white supremacist tattoos on his arms. wade michael page, age 40, the shooter, as identified by sources close to the investigation. prior to that, not a lot of answers were available to folks as to who was responsible for this before knowing the identity of wade michael paige, which we've just released. people were left to respond and kind of sort things out on their own. a makeshift memorial was set up outside the area where the media was corralled. we also have a picture of what was going on inside the temple just as the shooting started. folks are saying that without a word, the gunman just walked in, started opening fire. now, the

bill: steve brown now. steve brown live in tampa starting our coverage of the convention 72 hours a way. how are things shaping up, steve? good morning. >> good morninging bill and good morning, jamie. things are being built out. fences are being put up and barriers. we're sure everything, weather permitting will be a go monday night. they're changing things up this go round with a couple things happening later in the week happening earlier. they will take care of both. the platform committee report, which essentially the planks that the party members themselves say that the party is about, they're going to try to take care of that on monday and roll call as well. could be a rather lengthy evening on monday. they're trying to take care of both of those pieces early on in the process, saving the rest of the week to kind of frame the argument for the romney-ryan in the fall election. bill? bill: every four years we see a new wrinkle how the campaigns really try to get their message out. social media will play

steve brown is at the scene with the lathes. steve thanks for being with us. has the perp been identified? we are hearing this about ex military. what do we know about this search? >> there has been extraordinarily little information released on this case. he has been dead for 8 or 9 hours. we haven't heard from any of those killed or wounded either. we haven't gotten the information about what kind of gun or guns were used in this particular shooting except to say there were two recovered from the scene one to be assumed to be an officer's gun and won the gunman's gun. what officials have said so far from the justice department producer is this gunman was in his 40s and veteran of the u.s. army. we know he has military training and in his 40s. as far as the investigation is concerned. what police have said is that the first two officers arrived on the scene. the first wounded while attending to someone who was shot themselves and the second who exchanged gun fire with the gunman ultimately killing them prevented a larger tragedy at the temple had it not been
