[ applause ] an america in which politicians redefine rape and victims are victimized all over again. in which someone decides which domestic violence victim deserves access to services and which don't. we know what this america would look like. in a few short months that's the america that we could be but that's not the america that we should be and it'

next so if you remember the whole deal happened because bank of america was passed by lehman brothers and then merrill lynch c.e.o. swooped in and said hey if you're going to buy an investment bank by us and of course you know lehman failed of that weekend because bank of america didn't buy it but then once bank of america bought merrill lynch the deal was done in forty eight hours it was really sloppy they overpaid for it you know the merrill share price was seventeen dollars a share and merrill paid twenty nine dollars a share so just from the beginning this was a really rich deal for a struggling bank and a lot of shareholders thought why are you paying so much and at the same time bank of america stock price fell twenty billion dollars in only two trading days so they were feeling the pain right away they might have been able to look past that if it hadn't come out within a matter of months that merrill lynch was sitting on seventy billion dollars of losses in credit default swaps and things like that and the shareholders thought you guys were supposed to investigate this deal you

also, he did say that he loved america and they're going to take america back. he and paul ryan. what is the plan to take america back and what's your take on his comments today? >> well, we did get to hear specifics, which earlier in the show we wanted to hear. and he gave us his five-point plan, which he unveiled at the convention in his speech. he addressed energy policy, the keystone pipeline, which by the way is supported by unions as a great source of jobs. he talked about cracking down on china and cheaters when it comes to trade and opening up trade so that folks here in the united states could export their markets abroad, get those buyers and increase their economic strength. he talked about education, improving education. in the republican convention, they were more specific in discussing school choice, giving parents more choice in terms of where they send their children. and in fact, in louisiana, they have a voucher program there where i believe about 300,000 parents have chosen it to send their kids to schools of, as they say, of their choosing. number four looking

what happened to america? , was saying to somebody the other day to margaret in the 1970's and 80's. some of you grew up in those tickets as well or earlier relator. it was always this incredible sense of american optimism. the musical -- the music was happy. the culture was happy. even though we did -- there were things that were problematic in the culture, but the overall narrative, the story of america was positive and upbeat. you felt that in your various means that this country was exceptional, this country would allow you to do whatever you want to do. this country would not stop you from dreaming and doing whatever you want to do. and grew up with that sense of optimism. every day was a sunny day in america, even when it was pouring down rain. will he experience over the last couple of years has been a grand step of that sense of optimism. has been a robbery, in large part by our own leaders of that sense of optimism and the very essence of american exceptional some "what the (bleep) just happened".
