(applause) >> we're back with chris wallace of fox news sunday. chris, president clinton will play a pretty major role in this convention, that's two pretty big egos on the same stage. talk about if he could overshadow president clinton. >> they won't be on the same stage. president clinton will be here the at the time warner arena, convention hall. and then president obama will be at the football stadium on thursday. but, you know, i think that clinton can do a lot for obama because he can make an argument and, you know, whether you like him or don't. nobody knows this better than you, growing up with him in arkansas, he's one of the master politicians, one of the most effective people to argue any case that i've ever seen in politics and i think he will maybe do even better than president obama does

a serious look with "fox news sunday"'s chris wallace. thank you for joining me. >> delight to be here and having met janet huckabee you are right. debby wasserman-shult doesn't know. >> i will let janice go to huckabee and she will convince debby what a strong woman looks like. what about the tone of the rnc. people were surprised it was not skin the bark off of the tree of the speeches. they generally were tame and sedate. there was certainly sharp contrast. did you feel like there was an intentional effort to tone down personal effort to the president. >> yes, i do. i don't think it is because suddenly the republicans are kindler or gentler. it was a political calculation. their target audience and the people who will win the election for them are the people who voted for obama in 2008, but are now on the bubble. they even had focus groups of specifically that group of voters going on in the convention. they feel that attacking president obama who is personally very popular personally, a counter productive way to go. a much more effect

nobody wants to get more to the bottom of this than we do. >> jamie: joining me is chris wallace. good morning. we all learn more every day after this tragic event. one of the things we learn or seey to feel is that our people there should have been better protected. what did robert gibbs say about that? >> one of the things we were talking about is the fact that the story has change. he said the facts have changed. when susan rice sat down at the table with me last sunday, the same desk. i asked her and i specifically mentioned the fact that the president of libya was saying this was a preplanned attack. al-qaeda was saying it was revenge. she continued to say, there were other people saying other things she and the administration continued to say it was a spontaneous demonstration about the video that spun out of control. the question i was asking robert gibbs, if it's spontaneous and about the video then it is an indication that the administration's foreign policy isn't working and also a way of saying al-qaeda is not as strong as the administration would have us believe that.

at least not yet, chris wallace discusses that with house intelligence committee chairman mike rogers. >> i think it is just too early to make that conclusion. there are analysts and department of defense and cia and operatives in both places, as and fbi agent i get to look at all of that and i come to a different conclusion. they are only moderately confident that it was a spontaneous event and that is because there are huge gaps in what we know. >> jamie: joining my now the anchor of fox news sunday, chris wallace, who did that interview. and others for today's fox news sunday, chris, good morning. >> good morning, yeah. we talked, first of all, to the u.s. ambassador to the united nations, susan rice. and, she was the one who made the comment that mike rogers was reacting to. she said she believed the attack on the embassy, or the consulate, in benghazi, was spontaneous and that it then spun out of control and escalated. but, in the rest of his answer to that question, mike rogers says, look, it seemed to be an extremely well coordinated attack. you can talk about what was the spar

chris wallace. you have discussed a billion different tax policy interviews over the past number of years. >> yes, that was interesting and it is interesting, because, i think you saw sort of a different focus there, on the case of the romney campaign and they say raising taxes, that is what the president would do, let the bush tax cuts expire for any family that makes more than $250,000 a year, it is a position, incidentally, that barack obama took in 2010 when the economy was growing at a faster rate than it is now, he said it's not a time to raise taxes, because it will hurt the recovery, but, now, the obama camp has decided on its position and it has a lot to do and that is why romney's horse came into it with fairness and they are saying we're on the side of the middle class and they are for protecting the rich. and, it may be less an economic argument, and a growth argument than it is a fairness argument. >> eric: we saw it during both different conventions and how do you think it will play ou

that will be interesting. >> bill: we just heard chris wallace talk to martha a moment ago. and he talked to david axelrod for his fox news sunday show and made it quite clear mitt romney will be the main target here in charlotte. now i hadn't heard you comment since mitt romney made his speech on thursday night, and we heard the president yesterday say it was a rerun of ideas and, you could watch it on black-and-white t.v. suggesting the ideas were old and there was nothing new in there. what did you think of mitt romney's presentation thursday night? >> caller: well, i was pleased that he not only represents but he was able to articulate a completely different vision than what barack obama has cast for america. you know, what obama has represented is just this -- being adamant that the answer to the economic woes we're facing in america and the position we have in the world stage is, grow more government, incur more debt and the solution isn't empowering the individual, and letting the private sector grow. now that is opposed to mitt romney's vision and the republicans, an

the question in my mind is going forward, what chris wallace picked up on. people said well, exactly how would you accomplish some of the goals? but it doesn't feel, looking at this audience, just feeling energy here, it doesn't feel like that is what this was about. but a president who has a confidence. doesn't look like he's feeling ampk yilty at the moment. he's clear about who his opponent s vision, value and difference. >> so you're saying 2008 he says i offer you hope, 2012 says you offer me hope? >> i did say that. he said you're the hope. american people, he spoke about being hopeful as opposed to being the candidate of hope. >> chris? >> i thought it was a speech that had all of the virtues awe associate with barack obama's speaking style. the cadence juan mentioned and all of it. i thought poised and he delivered it well and so on. i don't, i think given the difficult task he faced he probably did this about as well as he could but faced a difficult task. it probably didn't have it in more than the usual quotient of dishonesty for a political speec

chris wallace joins me with a preview. good morning, chris. >> good morning, melanie. >> we started off the week remembering 9/11. by the end of that day, we had the death of a u.s. ambassador at the hands of armed rebels. some prominent americans are saying there is a connection. >> well, certainly it appears that the video, in the case of cairo -- i'm not so quite as sure in terms of libya. in terms of cairo, the video insulting the prophet mohammed was the spark plug. the administration would have us believe that all of these, this wave of violence against american personnel and interests across the middle east, more than two dozen countries, that all of that is just because of the video, has nothing do t.o. do with u.s. policies. i think that's questionable. we'll be talking today to ambassador susan rice, the american ambassador to the united nations. we'll also be talking, as mentioned, to the chairman of the house intelligence committee, mike rogers. i think those are two of the key questions. one, in terms of this

chris wallace is with us now on set here on the convention floor. huge night. what's his number one task? >> it's interesting because they feel, the obama camp feels that romney made a big mistake on his final night not getting into more specifics about his plan for the next four years. they say they're not going to make that mistake and in the excerpts, in addition to the rhetoric, they laid out a set. here is the problem. i, a couple of days ago, had read the speech that obama gave in 2008. they let out a set of what they're going to do tonight, it's awfully familiar. for instance, tonight he's going to say, i'm going to cut net oil imports in half by 2020. in 2008 he said, i'm going to end dependence on middle east oil by 2018. tonight he's going to say, i'm going to recruit 100,000 math and science teachers. four years ago he said, i'm going to recruit an army of new teachers. so i suspect you're going to hear some republicans and some independent analysts tomorrow saying this is just old wine and new bottles. >> shep: the folks from our "fox business" netw

chris wallace is the host of fox news sunday and joins us live from charlotte with a preview of today's program. good morning once again, chris. >> reporter: good morning, melanie. >> so give me your rating of now that the republican convention is over. how would you rate it? two stars, three stars, four stars, more? >> as we're talking, they are playing music and testing the sound system here, but i did hear you. i thought it was a successful convention. they didn't have a lot they had to do. i think the two things that were most interesting is, one, that romney needed to show he was a credible alternative, that if you're not -- if you're fed up or you're thinking of switching from obama, that he would be, you know, a reasonable person to have as your president, to have, you know, on the tv show that is watching the presidency over four years in your home. and i think he passed that test. the other thing that was very interesting, and you heard a little bit about it in the clip that you just played, they went after obama in a very delicate way. they didn't just try to rip his skin off,
