christie smith is live with the changes that are about to come. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. residents here in berkeley say that frankly, they are tired of seeing it and that is someone who is clearly not disabled using one of those blue disabled placards just to get one of the parking spots up front especially in downtown berkeley where parking is so tixt so starting today police are saying no more. they are going after placard abuse. what's different is that because of a recent change in the law, parking enforcement officers now have the authority to ask drivers for identification and evidence that they can legally use that placard to park. in the past only police officers could do that. berkeley's police chief is trying to protect the spaces so people who really have disabilities have those spaces available when they need them. go ahead and find a spot and pay that parking meter. if a driver is caught using one of those placards illegally the placards could be taken away with fines up to $1,000. christie smith, "today in

christie smith is live in oakland with a look at what's being done to restore this memorial. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. this is really painful for people who lived through the oakland hills fire storm in 1991. as you said, this isn't the first time that someone vandalized the memorial sculpture. it's the third time. and this time someone cut off five of the metal poles here. despite the fact if you look here, there are clear signs saying that there are security cameras in use. the committee that developed the fire storm memorial garden is hoping that the tape from the cameras might identify a suspect. overnight saturday or early sunday someone took the poles down, they cut them, possibly to sell for scrap. they represent trees and regrowth from the oakland hills fire storm where 3,000 homes were lost and 25 people died. the committee is trying to now raise about $5,000 to help maintain the security system they have, perhaps upgrade it and try and repair the sculpture. reporting live, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> a man is dead after another offic

christie smith has a look at what's being done. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, marla. you do have to wonder what someone is thinking when they do something like this. this isn't the first time. it's the third time that someone has damaged this memorial sculpture. if you can pan over here, someone cut five metal poles off the structure. this happened even though it's pretty obvious that they have got security cameras up near the whole thing. the committee that maintains the oakland hills sculpture is hoping that the cameras might provide a clue to whoever did this. more than 3,000 homes were lost in the 1991 fire, 25 people died. again, some time over the weekend vandals cut the metal off of theç cup tur which represents trees and redproth after the fire storm. in the past the committee said that vandals may be trying to sell some of this for scrap but it's disheartening for the families who suffered through the fire storm. what's happening is that the committee is trying to raise $5,000 to maintain their security
