david gregory joins us now to talk about that, and more. i'm curious to know, david, what do we make of this? why now? >> i think that's got a lot of republicans scratching their heads. they've already taken a beating for not releasing more. now he releases one of those two years, and revives the debate about why not more. it's a fitting end to what's been a horrible end to the romney campaign. he pays 14%. he doesn't get a salary until earned income off investments. but that's not how most people do it. and especially during the week when he talked about writing off half the country because, you know, they're all too dependent on the government. >> i wonder if that was the thing that made him finally release the tax results, because he is talking about people who aren't paying taxes. >> i don't know that that was it. i think there was some need to finally do it. but again, i don't know why now. i think he had pledged to do two years. there is an upside that they argue, paul ryan made this point, look how much he gave to charity. he's getti

on sunday, david gregory says really? you're going to really appeal obama care, all of it on day one? here's what that sounded like. >> on healthcare, you say you would rescind the president's healthcare plan on day one. does that mean you're prepared to say to americans young adults and those with pre-existing conditions that they would no longer be guaranteed healthcare? >> of course not. i say we're going to replace obama care. and i'm replacing it with my own plan and even in massachusetts where i was governor, our plan there deals with pre-existing conditions and with young -- >> so you keep that as part of the federal plan. >> bill: he said he would keep the pre-existing conditions, that provision and he would keep the provision that children could stay on their parent's health plan as long as they like. he said. and so what's going on here, judd? >> it was really a fascinating moment because it is the classic politician's dilemma in that he's got a position staked out. this has been staked out extremely vigorously

david gregory, it was a very, very informative interview. we did get insight into things. michael, with you, is governor romney suddenly re embracing romney care? >> what i hear him doing is embracing the popular aspects of the president's plan. i wish there had been a follow-up question asked of governor romney, and it would have been this. how do you pay for or how do you ensure insurance companies are affording coverage for pre-existing conditions and affording coverage for younger americans if you're getting rid of the individual mandate? because it seems to me you can't parse the president's plan. you need the individual mandate in order to have those requirements that are the most popular aspects of the plan. it's something that governor romney didn't address in primary season because he knows the objection in 2010 from the right wasn't to the federal government telling americans that they need insurance. it was to the notion generally of the government saying you need insurance. so now he's trying to tack toward the middle to appeal to independents. but i think it's

"meet the press" moderator david gregory joined us earlier today. he believes the president will attack mitt romney's vague ideas on how to improve the economy. >> talking to the president's advisers really what they want to do is be more specific. i think where they'll attack governor romney is, you know, that he went on the offensive against president obama, but didn't give the american people a road map for how he's going to usher in a better economy. i think that'll be the big attack line. >> the president will be looking for a bump from the convention. new polls from the rasmussen reports show that mitt romney is ahead of president obama 47-44%. just five days ago, the two were tied in this poll. similar shift happened in battle ground states. rasmussen polled voters in 11 swing states and showed romney and president obama are tied. the president is leading by four points five days ago. the republican national convention could explain the recent bump which is typical when the event wraps up. >>> it's a busy day on "meet the press." david welcom
