c-span: what do you remember about your houston education? >> guest: there was--i had some wonderful teachers. i had some terrible teachers. it's--we--we also had racially segregated schools. the high school was strongly tracked. the kids who--some kids, like me, were put into the college track. others, the majority, were tracked into vocational programs or what they called at that time distributive education, where they were sent off to work for half the day. and a decision was made--as i show in this book, a decision was made pretty early on about which kids were going to be college bound and which were not. c-span: how was it decided that you were going to be college bound? >> guest: oh, i'm sure there were tests. they gave us all kinds of tests and--iq tests, aptitude tests. it was a lot of testing to track kids. what i found in my book was that the--the--these were all progressive movements. i mean, the--the great discovery for me, as i was doing this research--and i should say that i've been writing history of education now for 30 years

houston or denver. too early. what you see is 80% increase in who took the s.a.t. or 16% increase being accepted to college and other outcomes are positive. i want to point to two of them which are both phenomenal and distressing at the same time. number one, pregnancy. we tracked it down. imagine this. april 14, 2005. kids sit in an auditorium in central harlem. half of the girls get a ticket to go to a high quality school. the other half the to whatever school they are going to go to. four years -- seven years later the ones who didn't go are five times more likely to be pregnant. to the boys says that -- those that did not go are four times likely to be incarcerated. this is not just about test scores. i totally agree with folks who say high test scores for kids who are endangered or likely to be in prison not so interesting. kids who know the high factory in fear of are locked up and not interested in that. i am interested in these long-term outcome is. in the end these three pieces of evidence give

in houston we have six. these are high schools that started at or clock in the afternoon and will go to 7:30 at night monday through thursday. students that have to work to earn income for their family or kids who are one or two courses short they need to graduate can come back to the schools in the evening and get credit recovered to graduate. each one of our high schools and we started this in guilford county back in 2001 and carried it all the way through california and now to houston. we established dropout intervention courses in our high schools. we call them grad labs. the school district purchased a bank of laptop computers for each high school. we have hand-picked graduation coaches and kids who have built classes before. they teach the same thing over 44180 days and these are the same teachers who could go on line and could do credit recovery on line and last year in houston we recovered over 9000 lost course credits. the software program that we used was accredited by the western association of co

it is a buster in dallas and houston. rain being pulled out of the gulf of mexico but along the front it is a thin line of moisture. but we are watching the gulf coast and the moisture in the deep south because it could visit us next week. so next week looks different than this week. that is a little preview of what i'm going to have on the seven-day in a few minutes. meanwhile as we get in closer to the district, it is clear skies. a few high thin clouds out over ohio and west virginia, portions of kentucky, some of those high thin clouds may be around tomorrow but still a sparkler of a day to get started with an increase in clouds tomorrow afternoon. what about this evening? how about 76 degrees with full sunshine at 7:00. by 9:00 we are down to about 72 with some 60s in the suburbs under clear skies. and overnight maybe a patch or two of fog but by 11:00 down to 69. so it doesn't look like tonight will be as chilly as the other nights but still pretty delightful all things considered. so we are focusing on the weekend
