that's the point, the difference is, i think in many respects the rnc at the rnc convention, those emotive moments were more packed towards the end. that may have a lot to do with having to reorganize the whole idea of the monday event coming and having to happen on tuesday. that took away some speeches and some of that momentum. so you kind of pushed everything more towards the back. with that slow rampup, the democrats hit the ground running. those camera shots were the same whether you're in tampa or here in charlotte. and how people relate to the overall story, that's part of it. i think for rich lowrie and others who weren't following it on television, you missed those moments but they were there. >> i can't help but wonder how many of those tears in tampa were during clint eastwood's speech but maybe fur a different reason. >> there we go. >> i'm sorry. >> charlotte and look what happens. >> i couldn't resist. i wanted to make a point. we played a clip from are julian castro the keynote speaker last night. that's sort of like michelle obama's speech getting great reviews afterwards a

i've spoken with officials with the rnc, and they say this doesn't concern them. why? because typically democrats turn out for early voting in larger number than republicans. officials at the rnc tell me they're feeling incredibly confident right now when it comes to their ground game and voter outreach. they say this is going to translate into voter turnout between now and election day, so that is what in the words of one republican official allows him to stleep at night. we have a graphic of this breakdown. take a look. when you look at the numbers of 2012 compared to 2008, according to the rnc volunteers have made six times the phone calls nationwide than they had at this point in 2008. look at the swing states. virginia has made 11 times more phone calls, 12 times more door knocks than in 2008. in ohio a similar story. you see four times more phone calls than in 2008 and in colorado three times more phone calls. however, they concede that democrats have a powerful ground game as well when you look at the match-up there. in virginia democrats have 44 offices compare

. >> it is causing headaches at the rnc this morning. the rnc goes out and hires this firm, newly created firm, strategic allied consulting, run by a somewhat questionable operative, nathan spew. they're asked to register republicans in five battleground states. they hire thousands of workers, over 2,000 in florida, paying them about $12 an hour to go out, go door to door, get registration forms from republican voters. what happens is a couple weeks ago one of the workers drops off at a palm beach county satellite office 308 new registration forms. they go through, the workers go through it, find repeated problems in about 108 of them, including similar signatures, apparently phony signatures, and phony addresses as we just heard, some linked to a shell gas station, a land rover dealership and a medical building in boca. they then call in susan bucher calls in the republican director and he agrees there's a problem, they take it to the palm beach state attorney's office which launches an investigation. the florida republican party freaks

so much for the real and visible bump rnc chairman reince priebus predicted. what did get a real and visible bump during the convention? president obama's twitter feed. this was the most retweeted message during the entire republican convention. it was from barack obama's account and it read "this seat's taken." it was retweeted over 52,000 times. the significance was not lost on chicago mayor rahm emanuel. >> there is nothing memorable. the reason we're debating, even discussing clint eastwood is because there is nothing memorable about mitt romney's speech. >> in other words, clint eastwood's empty chair stole the show and the most memorable line, more than anything mitt romney had to say, came from a democrat who wasn't even there. joining us now from charlotte, north carolina, is msnbc contributor sam stein of the huffington post. sam, how is it down there and are people still talking about the empty chair? >> it's hot down here but not as hot as tampa, thank god. as for the empty chair, yes, clint eastwood was like the star of the rnc. people loved it. th

what about the tone of the rnc. people were surprised it was not skin the bark off of the tree of the speeches. they generally were tame and sedate. there was certainly sharp contrast. did you feel like there was an intentional effort to tone down personal effort to the president. >> yes, i do. i don't think it is because suddenly the republicans are kindler or gentler. it was a political calculation. their target audience and the people who will win the election for them are the people who voted for obama in 2008, but are now on the bubble. they even had focus groups of specifically that group of voters going on in the convention. they feel that attacking president obama who is personally very popular personally, a counter productive way to go. a much more effective way was in sorrow than anger. if you had to describe it disappointment. we understand that you were excite felt good when you voted for barack obama in be you andd had all of these hopes for the country and like him personally, but you are disappointed.
