what did robert gibbs say about that? >> one of the things we were talking about is the fact that the story has change. he said the facts have changed. when susan rice sat down at the table with me last sunday, the same desk. i asked her and i specifically mentioned the fact that the president of libya was saying this was a preplanned attack. al-qaeda was saying it was revenge. she continued to say, there were other people saying other things she and the administration continued to say it was a spontaneous demonstration about the video that spun out of control. the question i was asking robert gibbs, if it's spontaneous and about the video then it is an indication that the administration's foreign policy isn't working and also a way of saying al-qaeda is not as strong as the administration would have us believe that. is the question. was there a political spin put on the administration's tail to the political advantage of the president but to the disadvantage in terms of learning the truth of the american people. >> jamie

robert gibbs was interested grilled on "fox news sunday". how did he defend the president on this issue? >> the white house is trying to set the record straight what happened on benghazi. a lot will depend on the outcome of investigation what happened before, during and after the attack. you recall after the 9/11 terrorist attack in benghazi u.n. ambassador susan rice told fox news it was a spontaneous attack that was not preplanned but got out of control. that contradicted the president of libya's claim that it was in fact a premeditated strike. later the white house said the attack was in fact a terror attack. obama senior advisor robert gibbs explained why the administration changed its account. >> absolutely no one intentionally or unintentionally misled anybody involved in this. absolutely not. again, that is an answer that the press secretary gave on september the 14th. it is now september the 23rd. we learned more information every single day about what happened. nobody wants to get to the bottom of this more than we do. >> reporter:

but robert gibbs says he doesn't know any connection between the campaign and gallup. where do we leave this at this point. this was an existing lawsuit, it's unrelated. the doj got involved. where do we leave it? >> this is horrible timing for president obama to do this. last night on his speech he talked about every american having a fair playing field and fair opportunity to have success and have a good job and provide for their families. here two months before an election you have what appears to be on the surface an unfair playing field being created in favor of president obama. it's just a terrible p.r. strategy. the doj investigated this back in 2009. a year and a half went by, the gallup poll came by and asked for a meeting. nothing happened. now all of a sudden you are going to join in the lawsuit. it's bogus. it's a bully tack figure. they need to withdraw from this process and let it play out. shannon: if we do hear from the campaign, the doj or white house we'll hear their side of the story. megyn, i'm sure will bring it to you on "america live" if we get i

brent, you heard robert gibbs saying mitt romney has an edge going into the first debate. a lot of us are wondering whether you guys are just trying to keep expectations low. but what, what is the campaign most concerned about. with regards to that first debate. >> sure, first of all, craig, thanks for having me this afternoon, i appreciate it the debates will be a big moment in the campaign. i think everyone appreciates that. as robert said this morning on fox, mitt romney has been out there doing this for two years now. he's done 20 of these debates in the primaries, he's putting a lot of time and practicing. he took the entire week of our convention, a week where we were out during their convention, talking to voters, was down doing debate prep. so obviously romney is using this as a big moment. putting a lot of chips on the table. doing everything they can to make sure that governor romney is prepared. i think we'll see a good discussion between him and president obama on the issues. >> what's the president's biggest weakness going into the first debate? >> well look d
