>> reporter: raj, stevens studied history here at uc berkeley. the chancellor says he had a passion for making the world a better and more peaceful place. perhaps nowhere is his loss being felt more tonight than here in the east bay. >> just couldn't believe it. went through the usual denial, kind of hoping that wasn't the chris stevens. but of course i knew he was in libya. so it had to be him. >> reporter: george sharpenberger spent the day thinking about his friend and fellow peace corps member chris stevens. the two served together in the peace corps in the '80s. the uc berkeley grad taught english to kids in a small moroccan town. sharpenberger says even back then stevens dreamed of becoming an ambassador. >> he fell in love with morocco and that part of the world. it was kind of a spark that shaped the rest of his career. >> reporter: the east bay native went on to study law at uc hastings in san francisco. >> if he was in town, he would pop in my office or leave a card or something. >> reporter: law professor david levine kept in touch wit

went to college here at uc berkeley. he also got his law degree from uc hastings law in san francisco. according to the white house, all were killed in the attack on the us consulate in bengmazi. it was an angry group shooting employees and setting the group on fire. this group was angry about a viral video made by a man from southern california and that group thinks that video mocs their muhammed prophet. chris stevens had been working as a diplomat to libya since 2007 and this morning, i talked to one of his former colleagues at the state department. >> chris went to libya when things were far more unsettled than they are now before gadhafi -- before the transition had taken place. he's a gutsy guy. he will do his job and do it with a big smile. >> reporter: and stevens was the career foreign service member, an expert on the middle east who spoke both arabic and french. a short time ago, i received the dean from the uc hastings school of law, he e-mailed me a statement about -- he e-mailed me a statement about his deat
