what struck me yesterday with john boehner he was saying as we approach the fiscal cliff, boehner was saying yesterday that the bottom line for republicans after this election is the same as it's been for 22 years. that is, that any kind of income tax hike, especially for the wealthy, is off the table for them. do you have a sense of what the white house is thinking is on the table? we approach january 1st. is it that they are really eager mainly to strike a grand bargain they can sell as a major bipartisan achievement? is the idea of fighting past january 1st if necessary to get rid of the bush tax cuts for the wealthy americans more of a priority for them? >> no. i think they want a deal if they can get it. you're right to listen closely to john boehner, because what he had is he'll accept some revenues in the context of tax reform, a big, wonderful, fuzzy nebulous idea. what he won't expect initially is a change in the rates. of course, that's what it's about. it's about the rates for the highest income earners. and that's where john boehner is refusing to start out in the negotiat

it definitely worsened after boehner spoke. go ahead, doug. >> i think it's going to take a significant tax increase to offset the differences between relative valuation between bonds and stocks. i don't think the president has any kind of -- has any idea of that kind of increase in mind. so the differential remains huge. i would add maybe the one thing that's changed a little bit is the u.s. has to take its tough medicine. tough medicine is we have to deal with issues like austerity and budgets and taxes. that's what europe has gone through the last three or four years. my guess is going forward this is the opportunity for europe to outshine the u.s. not that the u.s. will be a bad place to be, but incrementally, i think europe really looks good post-election. >> europe is going to outshine the u.s., huh? >> only because people are expecting such terrible things out of europe that when you expect terrible and you get, you know, so-so, that's an upside surprise any way you look at it. >> all right. we'll leave it there. gentlem

john boehner wants to cut a deal. he's saying these things now to maintain his street cred with the right wing, but the pieces are starting to move into place for some kind of a compromise. >> that's pretty optimistic. bill, this hour the president will be meeting with business leaders, including the great goldman sachs chief lloyd blank fin blankfein. what do you think he should ask of wall street and the nation's ceos? >> well, martin, it's a tough sort of conundrum because on the one hand this election, wall street ceos, of course, endorsed mitt romney with a passion. >> 3 to 1, i believe. >> well, the top eight of the top ten givers, donors to romney were wall street firms. so, you know, i'm not sure the president needs to -- is going to be willing to listen too closely to these guys. on the other hand, lloyd blankfein is part of this debt relief program. he's offered to raise his own taxes. a lot of these ceos have made that offer. they should listen to them, take them occupy that offer. i mean, even bill kristol

so john boehner is the most reasonable, responsible guy in washington, according to john boehner. do you agree with that? >> well, you know, it's a new day. and perhaps there's a new john boehner. you know, i'm optimistic, and i think that, you know, elections clarify things and so i think this shows a very positive willingness to make a deal perhaps. >> ana, do you agree with that? >> well, zoraida, let's remember what the house of representatives is like. so it's not a high threshold to be the most responsible person in washington. but i do, you know, i do think that john boehner is doing everything he can to signal he's willing to work to the. i think he received a message that the american people said that they want to see some cooperation. and i do think john boehner is a businessman, a business oriented person who understands the economy, and understands that solving the fiscal cliff would be an important part of not having the economy go off a cliff again. now the big question is, okay, so john boehner thinks he's the most responsible person in washington. will his republic

you heard john boehner willing to accept new revenue. heaharry reid in the senate, saying you can't push us around anymore. is this language that begins compromise. >> it will begin compromise, but it may be far more horrowing. it may be it takes place next year, rather than this year. the problem is john boehner himself has one more election. he wants to be re-elected as speaker of the house. that does not take place until january 3, 2013. if he cuts a deal with barack obama, he faces a serious revolt in his own caucus. >> tom: is your caution then don't expect a fiscal clip solution before january 3rd? is that what investors to expect? >> the best way out of this impasse for the time being, is gracious gesture for the president-elect, re-elect, president obama, he should offer to extend the tax cuts perhaps until march of next year. giving john boehner an opportunity to win his own re-election, and gather some goodwill on the republican side of the aisle. if mr. obama doesn't see it that way, we're in for a rough ride until next januar
