this week, delta confirmed it will buy a 49% stake in virgin atlantic. the deal will give delta more business out of london's busy heathrow airport. meanwhile, american airlines and u.s. airways are creeping closer to merger talks. american's pilots' union has accepted an offer to begin merger talks with u.s. airways. depaul university transportation professor joe schwieterman says the merger will likely happen in the coming months.
