you saw reports of the accident on i-40 west of oklahoma city. we had freezing rain in oklahoma throughout the night on christmas eve and then sleet on top of that. now we're going to see this all change over to snow. the snow will advance further to the east, especially christmas night. this means that as it intensifies and works its way eastward it's likely to bring blizzard conditions meaning blowing and drifting, heavy, heavy snow to paducah, kentucky and we'll see snow in places in the south that typically don't see it like little rock, arkansas. how 'unusual is that? snow falling on the ground might be once every ten years but measurable snow which we're likely to see with this storm hadn't happened since 1913. even for oklahoma city, carol, only once a decade we on average see so much snow so this is unusual this time of year. please eyes caution. the snowstorm will impact millions of people and don't forget the tornado threat in louisiana today. >> all right. thank you, bonnie. >>> first lady michelle obama is in the christmas spirit. the

you can see from atlanta to oklahoma city. this is oklahoma city. now we'll see a very stormy day there. freezing drizzle. right now it's 24 degrees. a north wind at 23. snow and sleet will turn to all snow after the noon hour. total day time sleet and snow accumulation about 3 to 5 inches. let's take you to atlanta which won't get into the snow but the fog has been really prevalent this morning. you can see kind of cutting off the taller buildings downtown. fog and mist, 53. rain comes in in ernest after about 3:00 and then tonight is when the severe weather threat finds its way into birmingham and atlanta, georgia. so here is a look. tornado watches posted until 4:00 and 1:00 central time. but, you know, tornado watches we're really going to see them and even tornado warnings. we've had them throughout the morning. they have since expired but it's been this line, kind of tough to see, but this is eastern texas and in toward louisiana. and that's the movement. these storms moving northeast at about 45 to 50 miles per hour. so that is the severe sid

is that how you felt when everyone was mired in the aftermath of the oklahoma city bombing? >> soledad, it's an instant cataclysm for the families and for the first responders, but the climb out is long, and it's searing and it's very difficult. today, 17 years after the oklahoma city bombing with private funds we are still putting children through college, providing counseling, first responders, firefighters and police officers and even providing medical care for a number of the badly injured. so the one thing about newtown, it is a community so stitching together, holding hands together, understanding your neighbor is really your neighbor, if not a family member. this is going to be a long time crawling out, scratching yourself out, because it's going to be searing. we've had suicides just a lot of agony after the oklahoma city bombing and i'm afraid that the tragedy in newtown is not going to be december. it's going to take a long time to recover. >> it sounds so brutal. you mentioned the first responders, and i remember seeing when the president came to the interfaith vi

that was my emotional reaction as a first responder at oklahoma city when i arrived on that scene, a scene 19 children were also killed by another evil american, that things had to change. that this could not be allowed again and similar feelings after 9/11 and i have absolute confidence our government when forced to change will take significant action. after oklahoma city, i was able to tell my children that it was safe for their dad to work in a federal building and after 9/11 i was able to tell my children that it would be safe to fly on a plane. and i think today there are specific things that can be done to make kids safe in school and they involve changes to gun law. >> what would be the first significant change you would like to see? i have a gut check question, would they support an assault on the assault weapons. what would be the first immediate change? >> the first immediate change would be the one that 80% of persons already want, and that is, if you buy a gun, you should have a background check. currently 40% of firearm transactions in america happen without a background

more than 20 vehicles mangled in a massive pileup that shut down interstate 40 west near oklahoma city. at least 10 people were taken to local homents. authorities say freezing rain made for treacherous travel. the same dangerous system spawned two possible tornadoes in texas, one person died when a tree fell on his car. all of these storms moving east/northeast and will continue to push eastward and take the severity with them. so big picture today for tornadoes, really, the propensity for quite a serious tornado outbreak, damaging winds, 60 to 80 miles per hour with straight line winds and even some hail. in some areas there could also be significant snowfall. so forget the eggnog and cookies. across much of the country, this year's holiday supplies include shovels, ice melts and severe weather radios. in springfield, missouri, it's a working christmas for the department of public works. crews say they're ready for whatever comes their way. >> on christmas night there's a lot of people traveling to their family's houses and then they gotta get home at some point. >>reporter: as this

that shut down interstate 40 joust outside oklahoma city. texas got a double dose of bad weather, a 25-year-old man was killed near houston after a tree fell on his pickup. snow covered the ground in long view and turned dallas into a winter wonderland and blizzard warnings stretched from arkansas to pennsylvania. turning to mobile, alabama, windows were shattered and cars tossed off streets as this tornado touched down. >> oh my god, we need to go. it's right there. >> that's scary. several buildings damaged and several car accidents were blamed on the storm but no reports of serious injuries. emergency management officials tell cnn power has been restored to many customers, just over 7,000 in the dark, down from 23,000 last night. we head to mobile, christina leavenworth of w.e.a.r. in just about an hour weather officials will assess damage. christina, what are you hearing so far? >> reporter: good morning, carol. we are seeing a lot of damage here and it's widespread. the national weather service is saying the tornado touched down in five
