we're based in san francisco. local 16 who actually the stagehands at the festival, over 36% of their staff are san francisco residents. but working with supervisor mar and through his leadership, we are hoping to increase those numbers as we move forward. >> did you say over 25% of the beverage and [speaker not understood] -- >> there is not a quota per se. there is rather a commitment to fill those positions through a hiring fair held in either the sunset or the richmond. and obviously we're looking not only to hire san francisco residents, but to actually target it towards those communities which are most impacted, the sunset and the richmond. >> so to you in the department, how do you intend to track that given the information reporting on employeeses by zip code? how is that going to work? >> yeah, what we've done in events of this kind, we have worked with another planet to track their own employees and local 16 who are paid through their payroll by zip code. we can work with them to try to obtain that data

to what makes san francisco -- what makes people want to come to san francisco and live in this city. it is important to what we do and many of the businesses that exist here on an ongoing basis. we have 16 million visitors a year. that is in no small part due to the activities associated with the night life and this city. that is not lost on all of us. one of the things that i think it's important to the mayor and myself as i sit here today, and i know that you guys are going to be focusing on, i looked out and i see so many pieces of the city family here engaged in this conversation. i think it is really a measurable thing that you have the chief of police introducing today's conversation and today's forum with you in addition to having the board of supervisors as civil the understand the work that you and why it is so important. having individuals like -- one of the board members spoke earlier about having oewd focusing on this. all this matters when you're trying to work collaborative late. part of the problem in the past has been people working in individual silos and not sharing

the impacts on san francisco could be devastating. until we have more clarity, what congress as a whole might or might not do we will need to remain vigilant about protecting our reserves and the city's financial position. that said i'm encouraged by the reelection of president obama and certainly for the leadership that leader pelosi has given and will continue to give. we will need their leadership as the president must quickly face the challenge of his second term, avoiding this fiscal cliff. in august of 2011 congress passed the budget control act which threatened automatic spending cuts if congress failed to come up with a planned deficit reduction by 2013. these cuts are what we refer to as sequestration. this would mean an across the board cut of between 7% and 10% of all defense and non-defense federal spending irrespective of policy or its impact on everyday people. these cuts would be absolutely devastating to our national and local economies. our -- show that sequestration will reduce federal funding direct to san francisco

they set foot in san francisco. a generation upon generation, of residence of san francisco had to endure the struggles and have made this city a very special place. i am very excited about the leadership that presides over san francisco today. mayor lee, supervisor chiu, mar, chu, and we had the treasurer. this ought to be a moment in which we celebrate the aspirations and the fact that we have risen to the governance of this country. the fact that we have changed the opportunity. last night, i have the opportunity to listen to an 86- year-old honoree at the gathering last night. she's had spoken about how her life was different and the opportunities that were denied because she was jewish. because of the efforts of norm and mike and your leade in, asiy are not denied opportunities because of where they come from. we are aspiring and we are leaving california and america in a new generation. -- leading california and america in a new generation. we have an obligation to lead in the 21st century. we are providing le

francisco for all san franciscos to enjoy. these projects as the mayor and monique said are made possible by the parks bond. four years ago it was approved by 72% of city voters and allowed us to address more than a billion dollars worth of deferred maintenance needs in our parks and to cultivate what once was an industrial waterfront into something such much more spectacular and if you have been around town you have seen all of the fantastic changes happening to the park and the new recreation center in chinatown, new play grounds and athletic fields and one of the special projects at mission play ground around 24th and valencia. yesterday we had the great pleasure of cutting a ribbon in the richmond. here in district ten there is a park renaissance. we are seeing incredible things happening thanks to the parks bond and we have a new play ground at mclaren park and new restrooms at bay view hill top and mclaren and the improvements here. since 2010 the port has been an incredible partnership and promoting our youth stewardshi

it was members of the san francisco board of supervisors who came to ask them to open san francisco general hospital, which they did. they ran it for four years until a very familiar thing happened, and that was the county board of supervisors had a dispute about how to pay health care bills. the sisters said we've had enough of that and went on to create st. mary's hospital. as you can see, very familiar with how the city works. even then, over 150 years. it is an important issue. we're glad to be able to provide it. we're glad to be able to be here and to recognize some super creative people and the super creative programs. the committee which reviewed folks and review projects had a tough time picking who should be chosen and who should be recognized. the list is fantastic. spur, of course, has worked for years and sponsor of this good government awards for a long time to make sure that the folks that work so hard that do not get recognized every day -- you do get recognized. firstly, from the business community, i want to say how proud we are to have you and how proud we are for the wor

san francisco is no different. and i have shared that emotional experience with the supervisor and everybody here, in our law enforcement, and in our health department as well. the question for us, then, is what do we do about it? and not only can we share in this tragedy and signal our sympathies to the families as we've done, but we've got to do something more. and this is where i want to make sure i recognize all of the people that are in that effort of doing something about it, including the officials in san francisco. and some have been at this longer than others to try to do something about it, have reached limitations. yet again, i think this tragedy at sandy hook reminds us that we've got to keep trying and we've got to keep doing more about it. and, so, i want to first of all recognize that senator feinstein, in my conversations with her, and the tragedies she's experienced as mayor of san francisco as well as her attempts to ban assault weapons and had done so in the past, and that her federal assault leg

san francisco general hospital is the only trauma center in the city and county of san francisco and in the u.s. it is, in fact, i think, the best trauma center in the united states. we stand ready 24/7 to care for any injured patient in the city and county of san francisco. we also at general hospital are caring for uninsured and underinsured people who come in after injured. we also represent -- i also represent thousands of dedicated physicians, surgeons, nurses, administration and therapists who care for the hundreds of thousands of patients who come to our hospital. i have dedicated my life to providing care for injured patients in our community. it is truly a team effort to provide care for the victims of vie lertctionv crime. we rely heavily on our many trained professionals 20 help us do our work each day. after persons injured due to shooting after the scene, people go there, public firefighters and servants. the trauma surgeons, emergency physicians anesthesiologists, orthopedic surgeons, nurses, therapists and many, many others who come to help us work on the patient. and

he has important history here in san francisco. he was the founder and former publisher editor of the san francisco" nx based philippe news. he and the philippine news have played a major role in the growing visibility and activism an outspoken critic of the late president marcos and despite bribes from the administration he continued to fiercely expose the human rights violations of the dictator. seven kids in the sunset and produced the philippine news from their headquarters south of market to become the most read filipino newspaper in the united states with circulation of 120,000. he's founding chairperson of national federation of philippine american association, been a voice for immigrants rights, farm workers struggle and -- equity for over five decades. last month he received a lifetime achievement award from the filipino-american press club. he is survived by his wife and seven kids. >> clerk calvillo: thank you, supervisor avalos. supervisor mar. >> supervisor mar: thank you. i first wanted to ask if we could -- meeting i

francisco businesses start and grow here in san francisco. our first speaker is mayor lee. he has been a strong advocate of open data, both in his current position and also historically as the city administrator. and he's going to be sharing with you some really exciting announcements and his vision for open data. mayor? (applause) >> hi, good morning. welcome again to innovation month in san francisc

the san francisco tech shop is one example. for a small monthly fee, you get access to construction, $1 million in machine tools, and access to contract manufacturing to bring prototypes to market. also consider the case of member-owned and controlled cooperatives. there are many in the bay area. the u.n. has declared 2012 the international year of the cooperative because of their proven ability to give every day people control over their economic destiny. we have a vibrant co-op seen -- scene in the bay area. san francisco can do more to support them through the cooperative model. the main reason we're here today is because this new economic mode calls for new policies. i encourage you to check out policies for a shareable city to see the implications policy was for this new economy coming in with different services. some things we covered our house parking and zoning regulations do not really account for car sharing and parking sharing. hotel regulations are outmoded for new businesses. food and restaurant regulation does not

crime in san francisco, violent crime in san francisco remains down about 3%. despite the fact that we're down almost 300 police officers. however, through the efforts of commission, and mayor lee and cooperation with the board of supervisors, we do have a hiring plan. we are hiring right now. i will speak a little bit about our recruiting efforts at the end of my presentation. but for anybody that is watching on sfgov and wants to apply to be a san francisco police officer, if you live and work and/or go to school in san francisco, this is your city. and you know, we are a world-recognized police department. and we would love to have you, if you interested in helping people we are that police department and we would love to have you. violent crime is down about 3%. unfortunately property crime as we focus on violent crime is up about 10%. largely a lot of that is auto burglaries, the thefts of cell phones, electronic devices and we have been doing a safe-shopper campaign as we move into the holidays. please guard your cell phones when you are walking around an

(applause) >> so, we're going to show another application from motion launch, the founder and ceo, john, will be sharing some of the work that they're doing. they're based here out of san francisco and they've got a great announcement to make. >> i am jon mills. i'm ceo of motion loft. we started about three years ago developing sensors that we could place around cities that would give us some analytics on how people move around cities and how vehicles drive around cities. so, currently we have 16 neighborhoods -- 18 neighborhoods covered in san francisco, and we get real-time data back that shows exactly how many people go by some of the busiest areas in san francisco. so, you can see here san francisco, on average total, i think we had 150 people cross our sensors on average for every sensor
