collin powell still regards himself as a republican. over the weekend, he said the republican party has areas of intolerance. is that true? might the same thing be said of conservatives? >> it is not true at all. i have been a conservative a long time. >> i have been all over the country working with groups and i have not seen any evidence of intolerance. when we have a conservative african-american step up to run like tim scott. odds are he is going to win. we appreciate that kind of diversity in our party. when you see them running, you see the republican party welcome them. so what we are looking for is not people for tokenism, we want people from all walked of life. i would be remiss if i didn't mention that the big issue in front of us now is our debt. and the debt ceiling is an alarm bell going off telling us we need to cut spending. i'm hopeful that the parties can come together and agree to balancing our budget. i think it is a common sense idea. >> you know, somebody once said that free market capitalism is the best path to pro

collin powell, self-reliant guy, rising from poverty in the south bronx to the powerful position of secretary of state and powell did it the old fashioned way. he under it. while attending city cleaning in new york -- college in d.c. he won the bronze star in vietnam. came back a respected army officer. he then went to washington as a white house fellow during the nixon administration. from there, general powell rose through the ranks, becoming national security advisor to president reagan, the first black american to ever hold that post. he continued in the administrations of bush the elder and the younger. general powell presents himself as a rather conservative individual, a traditional man. but his politics are mixed. he is pro-choice, for example. however, up until 2008, he was always a staunch republican. now that has changed. as the general voted for barack obama twice. in the process, powell has been very critical of the republican party as it stands today. he has also made some comments about race and the g.o.p. >> they still sort of look down on minorities. how can i evidence that?

another friend of ours, general collin powell is with us. what do you make of today's pomp and ceremony and what i always say this nation does very well? >> i love it. i love it. i mean, it's one of those days, as all inauguration days are wherefore a moment you come together, celebrate the magic of our democratic system, the magic of the people deciding who the next leader is going to be. as peggy just said, he won rather decisively this time. but now the challenges are before him. and you mentioned the vitriol within our system. we've always had, you know, strong views opposing one another. our founding fathers did. and i think that's good. that's what democracy is all about. but ultimately, those strong views have to result in compromise or else where he don't get anywhere. and is so i hope beginning tomorrow we'll see a new level of civility within our discussion, our political discussion and compromise. i noticed in the last few days, the republicans have made some offers with respect to the debt ceiling and i've seen some republicans t
