>>> i'm david gregory. this is "press pass," your all extra pass. looking at american leadership during another turbulent political time. i'm joined by john meechah out with a new book and executive editor at random house and of course a frequent guest here and is on "meet the press." congratulations on the book. so what i highlighted initially just from the prologue -- and i will get through all of this even if i'm a slow reader, but this is what stood out to me about jefferson. broadly put, philosophers think politicians maneuver. jefferson's genius was that he was both and he could do both often simultaneously such as the art of power. why did you want to look at thomas jefferson through the prism of how to wield power? >> because i think he sent us in the direction of his ideas and his intellectual achievements, his art, his architecture, with his tombstone. one of the great trivia questions in american history is what are the three things, author of the declaration of independence, founder of the university of virginia, that's what he wanted to

david gregory, watching with us there, tomorrow as we watch him speak to the nation, david, i'm reminded of four years ago there was a sense of understandable sense of idealism as the president began his term. tell me how the realism of four years in office will perhaps affect what he tells us tomorrow. >> well, first we should point out, i think that as an historic figure, president obama is that when he walks into the room. he doesn't have to say anything. he's the first african-american president and now to be re-elected. and so the family portrait that has captured so much of the country, republicans and democrats was just reaffirmed in that very formal swearing-in, though intimate because of when it was done and where it was done. the realism, i think, lester, is about the fights of the day, against that gorgeous blue sky, the rotunda of the capitol is a very difficult atmosphere in washington. guns, the debt, the economy and how two parties can find a way to work together. that is what the american people want, and yet the american people return to status quo version of our governm

david gregory is moderator of "meet the press". >> good morning, lester. >> let's talk about the possible gun control solutions. universal background checks. closed the gun show loophole. ban on high-capacity magazines. as you know, this conversation has often been phrased in terms of what is politically possible. >> right. >> what does the president want and what is he likely to get? >> well, what i think he wants as a constructive and political matter is to do something as broad as he can, to have a package of legislation that addresses mental health, that addresses background checks and certain bans on whether it's high-capacity magazines or assault weapons. to do a combination of things that reflects the idea that everybody has a role to play. maybe there are were even some restrictions on the entertainment industry with regard to video games and the like. i think that is an approach that has a better opportunity to bring more people to the table who are opposed. the nra is diametrically opposed to new regulation, particularly around assault weapons and magazines. so that part seems t
