jackie, how did you get involved in gun issues? >> i came about it from a public health approach to gun violence because i had worked with the children's organization and been introduced to david hemingway who has been really the guru on the public health approach to gun violence and it made sense to me because really gun violence is a public health concern when 30,000 people are dying every year consistently year after year, it is a major public health problem. >> john: kim, was it your encounter with real gun violence that led you down the route to be an activist? >> yes. i was a victim of gun violence in 1999. i lost a dear friend. >> john: please explain what happened. >> we were in atlanta. we were going out on a date. columbine had just happened. he was a schoolteacher. and we talked all night about columbine. how not to let this happen again. we were devastated. then we went to a show and we were robbed. he was killed and i was shot. i survived. and since then, i've always wanted to do something like this but i just never qu

news 4's jackie benson live in northwest tonight to explain what happened. jackie? >> reporter: good evening. this is one of the areas of the city that is receiving extra police patrols because of inauguration weekend. but this homicide is not believed to be connected to any inauguration weekend celebration or event. police were called about 2:30 this morning after someone called 911 to report hearing gun shots. the location is directly across the street from howard university dormitory and students walk up and down the block at all hours. the victim, 44-year-old tracy mcfadden was shot several times and collapsed on the sidewalk. he was pronounced dead at a local hospital a short time later. homicide detectives and officials from the city's alcoholic beverage regulation agency question employees at chuck and billies. they found no evidence that the shooting was connected to any type of disagreement there and an employee tells news 4 he does not remember seeing the victim in the establishment that evening. and, again, short time ago i talked to a witness, someone wh

jackie robinson. on april 15th, 1947, jack roosevelt robinson put on a brooklyn dodger's uniform and stepped on the field breaking the color barrier in merng's past time. that one baseball game changed our culture forever. but it wasn't easy. in 1947, jim crow was in full force in the south. schools were still segregated and voting rights were not guaranteed. many of robinson's teammates didn't want him in a dodger's uniform. other players jeered him and even threw baseballs at his head. he was attacked by fans who spat on him from the stands. his beloved wife, his family and his home were con standpoistant threatened. but robinson persevered. he refused to meet violence with violence. robinson challenged himself to disarm his attackers by proving himself on the field. and he did. in 1947, he was voted rookie of the year. two years later, he was the national league's moesz valuable player. eventually leading the dodger's to a world series vikt ri. he was one of baseball's most thrilling players. jacki
