inhofe, no. >> john cornyn and ted cruz opposed john kerry's confirmation, and of course oklahoma senator james inhofe voted now. we should point out that senator inhofe is terrible at flying airplanes but great at denying the science of global warming there is no reason they should have voted against john kerry's confirmation. he is without a doubt the most qualified person to be our next secretary of state. john kerry has served on the senate foreign relations committee for, let's see, 28 years? in the last four as chairman, as has served four years of the united states navy including active duty in the vietnam war. he has run for president, kind of knows what is happening. and he also already has travelled the globe on behalf of the obama administration, helping mend strained relations with afghanistan and pakistan. during kerry's nomination, president obama called him the perfect person for the job. >> i think it's fair to say that few individuals know as many presidents and prime ministers or grasp our foreign policies as firmly as john kerry. and this makes him a perfect choice to g

let's start with john kerry. you worked with him. this is sort of -- well, of course, he ran for president. that would have been the peak of his career but this is a great way for john kerry? >> seems like i first met him when i was a junior in college. i have known him for 29 years. i worked on two senate races. i don't think there is a better prepared person to be secretary of state person from the time when he volunteered and served two tours of duty, has a very in his bones about how to protect our men and women overseas. the guy was a diplomat raised overseas, it's in his blood and in his choice. he chose to be a public serve ant. you i think he will be one of the best prepared secretaries of states we have ever had. >> speaks french. right? >> he does. a little portuguese, too. >> is that right? >> yeah. >> what i wonder about john kerry is -- and i have the same question about hillary clinton, of course, he is not going to be number 1. right? it's chairman of the foreign relations committee, he was number 1. can he ease will y

john kerry has wanted to be secretary of state. it's no big surprise that this is a role he has coveted. but for people out there who don't follow politics as close as we might, they might ask a question, why. here is a guy who has been in the senate since 1984. he's been a presidential nominee. why this, why now? >> well, there's two jobs he's always wanted. first, he wanted to be president of the united states and he lost that bid in 2004. the second job he's wanted is this one. the reason why you're seeing a difference between the way he'll be treated and the way hillary is is clearly and simply the fact he's no longer a political threat. hillary clinton could be the next democratic nominee. so the republicans want to come after her. he's old news as far as republicans are concerned. he's not going to be running for president again. he's one of their own. he came back to the club, the rich guys' club. so they're looking at him completely differently. >> as we see hillary clinton as one of the people who is going to introduce him

everybody says this is going to be smooth sailing for john kerry. what are your impressions so far about what we witnessed in the first hour? >> thomas, it's exactly as you said. senator kerry is going to be expeditedly confirmed by the senate. he's going to move into a position that he has been groomed for for almost five decades. i had the privilege of knowing him ever since i came to work for his senior senator for massachusetts, ted kennedy. i have enormous admiration. he clearly knows his agenda, and most importantly, he has the comedy of bipartisan relations on both sides of thei ieaisle a both sides of the congress. he's well respected, so he may have a much more easier time to get the resources that he needs, which ultimately is essential for him to succeed. >> we point out 28-plus years as a senator, so he knows highway around the hill very well. he is also adept at dealing with the protester who shows up at the end of his opening statements. i want to remind everybody what happened. take a listen. >> when will enough be enough? i'm tired o
