ron mott with us in the studio, thanks. >>> in colorado a harrowing day at the pretrial hearing in the case of another accused mass shooter, james holmes, charged with killing 12 people, injuring 58 others in the july shooting rampage at the aurora, colorado, movie theater. prosecutors played 911 tapes, one of which included anguished cries for help from a 13-year-old with two cousins inside, including a 6-year-old, both gravely wounded. in another call you could hear 30 shots ring out in the background over the course of a telephone call to 911 that lasted 27 seconds before the caller's voice was drowned out. there is news tonight about that attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi that killed four americans. the only suspect in that attack has been set free in tunisia. his attorney says the judge let him go due to a lack of evidence. we also learned secretary of state hillary clinton pictured at the white house today and back on the job this week will testify later this month about the benghazi attack. senator bob corker tells our own andrea mitchell mrs. clinton is likely to testify

our report on all of it tonight from nbc's ron mott. >> reporter: today, after months of silence about whether he would address widespread speculation that he used performance-enhancing drugs, lance armstrong issued an apology to the cancer foundation he founded for what livestrong said was the stress they have endured because of him. the mea culpa happened before armstrong sat down with oprah winfrey for an interview set to air thursday, in which he is expected to offer an admission of some measure. >> he was a transcendent sports figure, bigger than the sport and it was because of the livestrong band, because of the bracelets and people overcoming cancer. and frankly, people at livestrong have been pressuring him for a while now. to minimize this damage. >> reporter: nbc news learned that in a conversation, armstrong who forcefully denied doping allegations for years said, quote, it was just the way the game was played at the time so it was a level playing field. the 41-year-old armstrong has remained largely out of public view since the united states anti doping agency moved to vaca

. >> nbc's ron mott standing by on the national mall for us today. ron, we just heard from the president there and vice president joe biden and members of his family also participating in the day of service events. since when has all of this been a part of the inauguration festivities? >> reporter: the president when he was inaugurated four years ago made a day of service part of the festivitieses for that first weekend. he wants this to be a standing tradition and hoping future presidents would make this a standard tradition and another way to extend the legacy of dr. reverend martin luther king, jr., who also has a new memorial here in town. thousands of people have gone through this tent today on the national mall for this national day of service. about a hundred or so national or local organizations, signing people up to go back home and donate their time and maybe even some money to good causes all around the country. today we expect anywhere from a quarter million to 300,000 folks to take part in festivities all across the country in national d

mott with a good sunday to you, ron. what can we expect for the public inauguration tomorrow? >> hey, there, alex. good day to you. we don't expect this beautiful sunshiny weather that we've got right now. we wish we were holding this inauguration today. as you mentioned, the president and the vice president have been sworn in, so they have begun their second terms. and what was interesting, a little break from tradition, they did not get sworn in in the same location. the vice president, because of a scheduling issue with justice sotomayor, had his swearing in about three hours before the president over at the naval observatory, the vice president's official residence. of course as we saw the president received oath of office from chief justice john roberts. what was interest, after the oath was taken, sasha obama apparently said to her dad, you did great, you didn't mess up. of course a reference to last year when the chief justice misappropriated some words there. and the president repeated that error. they had to do

. >> ron mott with valerie -- as we mentioned a few moments ago, house republicans planning to introduce a bill next week to raise the debt limit ceiling for three months, the bill does not ask for spending cuts but could prevent a major fight with the white house. it does put the senate in an awkward position, by asking them to vote in three months when the debt ceiling has to be raised again. the white house said to be encouraged but a provision calls for cutting pay for the chamber that does not passes the budget. some democrats not happy. and house minority speaker nancy pelosi saying it's a gimmick, unworthy of the challenges we face and the debate we should be having. the message from the american people is clear, no games no default. for more on this, i would like to bring kristin. what is the white house saying about the issue? >> reporter: craig, they are saying that they are encouraged by the fact that house speaker, john boehner, is putting forward a proposal that increases the debt limit without an equal amount of spending cuts. that was his long-held position a and he is aba

let's go right to nbc's ron mott out there on the national mall, actually inside, which is nice. it's chilly out there. what can you tell us about today's day of services? >> reporter: hi there, alex. we're on the national mall. can't see it because we're in a tent. the washington monument is a stone's throw away behind me. the president, vice president and spouses out participating in today's national day of service. one of the things near and dear to the president's heart. he called for this four years ago in 2009 to get more americans involve ared and not only giving more money, which all of these organizations need, but their time, and it's paid off, because in 2011, they reached a five-year high in terms of volunteerism. two of the organizations here in this tent today, dozens here, american red cross is here. showing people how to save lives. giving cpr training. across the way, no kid hungry, fighting childhood hunger around the country. and alex, this place will be brimming with people. expecting about 8,000 to attend the inauguration monday. not all 800,000 will come thr

nbc's ron mott has been down there for us. and this will play a particularly poignant role on this martin luther king day. good morning. >> good morning to you. last night, i had a chance to visit with myrlie evers-williams. we talked about a number of things last night, but particularly the thrill she said she got when she was called to come and give the inr rinvocati here at the inauguration. she does so with the first avenue can american president of this country on a holiday named in honor of martin luther king jr. who like mickers evers gave his life for freedom. we talked about trying to promote his legacy. it's been a tough journey. here is how she described it. >> it's been difficult, but it's worked. because when you remove yourself from the anger and the bitterness and you focus on the positive, and you search for the meaning, for the anger and the hatred that took this man's life, you either sink to that level or you ride above it all. >> she has risen above it all. she is bell here, we think, about 11:35. she says
