who has become the face of gun violence in chicago. we welcome our viewers for watching us around the country. our top story live from the 15th district police headquarters. >> that afternoon the mayor is still inside the police station talking about proposed legislation which they unveiled to strengthen gun laws. they want to increase the prison terms. the chicago crime lab analysis found that the average sentence for someone convicted of a gun related crime was two years in prison. most served just one year. two suspected gang members some. police made the arrest early sunday. prosecutors have not filed charges. first lady michelle obama was among the hundreds of people who attended the funeral service. last month she performed with their school day and during the inauguration. about a week later she took final exams and went to the park. a man jumped the fence. arrested early sunday. if they canvassed the area and tracked down witnesses. murder victims have served as the inspiration for this proposed legislation. they want to increa

friday's shooting was the first in north chicago since october. >> a chicago man is accused of luring a 12-year-old boy into a sexual relationship. prosecutors say 31-year-old ryan ruiz joined an on-line chat room, pretended to be a young boy, and convinced the 12- year-old from glenview to meet him at richard johns park last may. once there, police say ruiz sexually assaulted the 12 year old. the boy told his mother, and she called the police. the boy picked ruiz out of a police lineup. ruiz is being held on 250 thousand dollars bond. a skokie woman is being held on 100-thousand dollars bond after allegedly biting off her boyfriend's tongue -- on valentine's day. police say the boyfriend of 51- year-old elaine cook tried to kiss and make-up with her following an argument thursday night. she allegedly bit off a large part of his tongue. the boyfriend then put it in a bag of ice, and called 9-1-1. doctors at evanston hopsital were not able to re-attach it. cook is charged with felony aggravated domestic battery. police are looking for a man who robbed a subway restaurant next to the ch

we just saw that report from chicago on an effort to work with students. david, it really does again come down to what can be done about it. and in the middle of all this, people are still looking to washington, gun control laws. where does it stand right now? >> i would say if one has realistic expectation force the political system, the news is reasonably good, you know, obviously it is a very polarizing issue. but i do think the sides are trying to find some sort of progress that can be made. so if you look at the stuff that's likely to get through the system, likely to have some background checks. we're likely to have at least possible to have some magazine controls, there is a lot of talk insurance, liblingt insurance for gun owners. that's more a state thing. there's also more prosecutorial things that are being talked about and proposed, making it hard for fell ons to get guns. controlling some of the transfers. youthful offenders. so these are not huge things, probably not assault weapons ban but a series of small things to make the friction of gun
