cities for mobility. mayors running the world city. city protocol and organization in barcelona that shares best practices. claire the counsel of local authority. the climate alliance. partnership of democratic local government in southeast asia. the international counsel of local environmental initiative and so on and so on. they go on and on. they are there working. i know, if i sit there and study and do a full report, your junior high school kids would say isn't there something else i can do for the report? they are important because they are achieving results in the very area where nations states are in lockup. unable to make any readies tings progress. they are actually doing things in important things together. and they do it because when you look at cities, the approach to governance, the approach to citizenship, the approach to policy problems turns out to look different from what happens when you look at nation states. what mayors are and do prepare to what presidents and prime minister are and do is striking in the distincti

us some analytics on how people move around cities and how vehicles drive around cities. so, currently we have 16 neighborhoods -- 18 neighborhoods covered in san francisco, and we get real-time data back that shows exactly how many people go by some of the busiest areas in san francisco. so, you can see here san francisco, on average total, i think we had 150 people cross our sensors on average for every sensor. in case you want to go into time density. so, we end up getting these really, really great visualizations of the busiest times and the least busiest times of people moving around san francisco. you want to go down into union square? you can see the data changes dramatically when we change the neighborhood. and just illustrates how different every neighborhood in san francisco really is. we're announcing today that we're providing some of this data to the city as a kind of public service to help the citizens here figure out how many people walk around their neighborhood. but mostly it's to help public service, like the fire department, the police department, the m

we now have over 40 cities that have joined us. in 2011 we partnered with gray area foundation on a series of hack-a-thons, 10,000 attendees, and created nearly 30 applications all being powered by open data. now in 2012 we have our legislation that you heard about. as you heard, we announced the chief data officer. we have a network of open data coordinators within each agency. and these coordinators, their primary responsibility is to provide insight, is to provide transparency into the data sets that they manage. and that's really important. we want to make sure that you guys have a clear understanding in our community about the data that we manage so you can tell us where we should be going next in terms of opening up our data sets. we also are doing some structural changes so that open data is really the default position for our city. we're making sure that data belongs to our city, not the vendor. and second, we're making sure that any software that we buy or build hatx a public api or some equivalent. we don't want to be hel

one thing the city of san francisco or big cities or federal, right, the other smaller cities, smaller cities have smaller budgets. having a structure to support all this open data takes a lot of money. so, when these small cities are thinking about this, they should think about a way of somehow equalizing because they are putting into having these open data team, right? so, what does make sense? this is kind of an open question to get your point of view. >> do you want to take that, shannon? >> i think that there is actually quite ah few examples. we can probably talk to this more with smaller cities that are making open data efforts. but what i would say is that it's proven more than the value of the investment. the return that we've gotten just by opening up the data has actually given back more. so, that would be my short answer to it, but i think you probably have more experience working directly with some of the cities. >> so, i grew up in a small city so i care about small cities a lot, 15,000 people, southern illinois. i'm a card nastionv fan. -- cardinals fan. i should say tha

and that's what new york city did. they first went to the hudson highlands, but 150 years later, it went to the delaware highlands. and really diverted the water that normally went to philadelphia to new york city. i don't think they anticipated that. narrator: the majority of new york city's drinking water comes from watersheds in upstate new york. a watershed is the area of land where water from rain or snow melt drains downhill into a body of water. mountains act as a funnel to feed rivers and lakes. and in this case, reservoirs. in the new york city system, water is collected and stored in 19 reservoirs, which can hold more than a year's supply -- over 580 billion gallons of water. almost all of the system is fed by gravity, without the use of energy-consuming pumps. valves open to regulate the flow into the 85-mile-long delaware aqueduct -- the longest tunnel in the world. at hillview reservoir... the water is partitioned into another giant tunnel system. where it travels deep below manhattan. the pressure built u

i do think things are changing at city hall and with city government generally. in the last budget process, we read able to get a full-time person in the office of economic and workforce development who will focus exclusively on nightlife and entertainment. that is a huge step with the positives of the industry. i would have worked very closely with supervisor chiu to get a budget for the entertainment commission. at times, the entertainment commission has been set up to fail because we expect all sorts of enforcement and make sure that people are cracking down on the rules, but we have not committed the resources necessary to do so. we are slowly doing that to make sure that they can meet their mission. and the of all special use district that i mentioned before, i think we lost -- we will finally start seeing some reform there. we have a lot more work to do. i recently asked the economist to supplement the impact study for the night live with a similar study for outdoor fairs and festivals, which we know contribute mightily to our economy. i'm very committed to

we are using that as the city wide effort to keep our city beautiful. sparkling and clean and educating youth and provide the scholarships and support for them and using culture -- about the cleanliness of our neighborhoods and respecting our neighborhoods all throughout our city. we are also engaging the bright technological mindsen joining us in s f city and join the chambers in creating jobs and training for those last year, last summer, over 5,005,000 and eight jobs were created for summer for our youth, paying jobs every single one of them and this year we expect to exceed it with your help and the help of other companies here and we need to create hope in every aspect for our youth as mayor khan said they are going to inherit the city and the successes that we are pawk talking about today, they are going to also inherit failure and is we want to have less failures with their invest and investment in them and in companies like sales force zooma and at which timer are all leading the evident with the 1800 other technology companies to help us create

this is what i love about the city. i also remember as dpw director, they had that watch column that put me in there every two weeks. i was famous. my e-mail, cell phone #, picture. cron watch. the bane of my existence. we have investments in infrastructure. i am helping to put together a number of different asks from the public this november. one of them i think you will respond to positively is reinvestment in our parks. we have done well with the private-partner sector. we will author of another bond because everybody loves their parks. that is half the reason why families want to stay. if we do not invest in our parks, that will be half the reason why they leave, in addition to the schools and affordability of housing. we have other things that will be very important to our infrastructure that we will be talking to the voters about. we will also honor something that i began with mayor knew some. when we do our public bonds, we would do them responsibly under a 10-year capital plan and we will not increase your prope

when did capital city clean up start? it was launched in 2005 as a pilot program focused on litter reduction in the downtown of edmonton. basically businesses were asked to adopt a block in their area and were responsible for litter clean up in that area and the program had such a huge success that they expanded the program in 2006 to include a residential component for litter pick-up. we now have over a thousand adopt a block captains that are responsible for adopting blocks around the city of edmonton for picking up litter and they each have crews of 4 to 5 thousand people so so we have four to five thousand people picking up litter. we link nonprofit organizations with businesses and the businesses pay the nonprofit organizations $650 per summer to have the nonprofits pick up litter in the blocks surrounding their business. the advantage to that is, again, community responsibility. they're not just picking up litter at the businesses, they are picking up litter in the surrounding blocks. we have a school litter reducti

the city is proposing to spend about $200 million to improve and expand biking in the city. and your group says, that's nice, but it's not really enough. in fact, it's not even close to enough. so if 200 million isn't enough, what would you like to see? how would the money be spent? >> that's right. the city's plan calls for spending $500 million over the next 5 years to bring san francisco up to what is really a top tier bicycling city. look at places like copenhagen, 30%, 40% of trips made by bicycle, it's possible. san francisco, itself, increased biking by 70% just in the past 5 years. the city has set its sights for dramatically increasing even more the number of bike trips in the city and has actually set that money goal at $500 million over the next 5 years. we think that's a worthwhile goal. >> you think it should be more, though? and how? tell me how should the money be spent? we're seeing more bike lanes. we're seeing other things that are making it easier and more visible for bikers to be safe on the roads. how should that additional money be spent? >> that's righ

we also represent the whole city. any district supervisor that focuses on the district without addressing the citywide issues is not doing his or her job. every day, i make sure i am working on the major citywide issues and the district issues. i try to be disciplined about that. >> how will you approach the tough choices? >> i think we have to start by looking at the most critical city services that we cannot do without. what are the ones that if they deteriorated, we will pay the price on? public safety falls into that category as a basic critical service. transportation, making sure we have the functional muni is critical. core public health services like dealing with mental on this on our streets -- with mental illness on our streets. if we do not provide services, we will pay the price. it works out from there in terms of budget priorities. >> with your plans on dealing with homelessness? >> it is homelessness in general and behavior on the streets. we need to make sure people have access to services. i was a sup
