miguel? >> after he left the s.e.a.l.s. he had a other mission of helping soldiers with posttraumatic stress syndrome. is that something he battled himself? >> though chris kyle was never officially diagnosed he struggled with everything that goes along with being in combat and he did have some struggles. but, as you mention, almost immediately after coming back to the united states he got involved with a nonprofit called fitgo. a dallas-based fitness company but a signed project called the hero's project. what they do, miguel. they work with soldiers suffering from ptsd. chris kyle was very involved in that community, but as i mentioned he was more proud of being a family man. as you imagine, those deployments he was gone, he was gone all but six months. he only spent six months at home after three years. incredibly difficult on him and his family. in a recent interview, i spoke to our affiliate and talked about those pressures. >> emotionfully it is very taxing. >> took it as an ultimatum.

nbc's miguel almaguer is live outside lapd headquarters. miguel, good evening. >> reporter: lester, good evening. some late-breaking news here in los angeles. the lapd chief says he will reopen christopher dorner's case. the man at the center of the manhunt was fired from his job in 2008 for making false claims about a superior officer. the chief says he's not doing this to appease the murder suspect but to instead gain the trust of the community. this as the manhunt for dorner becomes one of the largest in california history. tonight, new surveillance photos of murder suspect christopher dorner one week before the killing spree began. at his mother's home just outside of los angeles, detectives serve a search warrant, bag evidence but make no arrests. >> we're looking for any evidence that would lead us to dorner's whereabouts. >> reporter: 100 miles away, helicopters with heat-seeking technology comb the sny mountains over big bear. but the trail here has gone cold. after a three-day sweep of some 600 cabins, the only sign of the former l

i'm miguel marquez. if you're just tuning in, thanks for joining us. these are the top stories we're following in the cnn newsroom. new details about the murders of two military veterans, one a former navy s.e.a.l., chris kyle and his friend chad littlefield were shot and killed in ft. worth texas. the man who pulled the trigger is a veteran who kyle may have been trying to help with ptsd. susan candiotti joins us live with more. what do we know about how this happened? >> well, got some brand new information during the press conference. first of all, we learned about an alleged confession. and police say they think they also have found the murder weapon, when they describe as a semiautomatic handgun that was found at the suspect's house. let's back up a little bit. after the double shooting at that gun lodge, police say the suspected shooter who's 25-year-old eddie ray ralph took off in kyle's pickup truck. then they said that he went to his sister's house and told her and his brother what had happened, and then left that house. that's when the sister

the other thing that, miguel, i'm curious about. there's been a lot made about the cooperation and publicly, officials, law enforcement officials have been talking about the cooperation between state, federal and local officials in all of this. earlier tonight the lapd gave a press conference saying they had resources standing by, waiting at the airport, waiting to be called in by the san bernardino sheriffs department. we never got word whether those resources -- by resources i assume they mean s.w.a.t. team members and the like. the lapd department has been making a big deal this is a san bernardino operation. is there tension about this? >> this gets in to a difficult situation with the different agencies that were involved here. there was a lot of competition between the agencies here. it is not clear that san bernardino was open to other agencies whether it federal, local or counties coming in to san bernardino to assist them. keep in mind, san bernardino scaled back the level of their search throughout the past week thinking t

we want to start with miguel. the big question remains about with when we all will have positive i.d. on whether or not this the dorner. what are we hearing from police? >> reporter: well, it's going to depend on the body, but we have been told it could take days if not weeks to get positive forensic identification. but multiple sources told nbc news they believe it is the suspect, christopher dorner, who has been on the run now for six days. it was at the center of the six-day man hunt. they believe it's dorner for several reasons. there were several witnesses that saw dorner in this area right before the shooting. >> miguel, let me interrupt a second. the police conference just started. let's listen in. >> first off, i want to just express the extreme sorrow of our department for the members of the sheriffs department who lost a deputy yesterday in the tragic incidents that unfolded in the mountains of san bern dee know. there's a lot of apprehension today in any kind of celebration because this is not a celebra

nbc's miguel almaguer is live outside lapd headquarters. miguel, good evening. >> lester, good evening. lapd headquarters is a fortress. what the suspect may consider a high value target. he's been on the run now for three days in what police consider one of the largest manhunts in state history. tonight, new surveillance photos of murder suspect christopher dorner, one week before the killing spree began. at his mother's home just outside of los angeles, detectives served a search warrant, bagged evidence, but make no arrests. >> we're looking for any evidence that would lead us to dorner's whereabouts. >> reporter: 100 miles away, helicopters with heat-seeking technology comb the snowy mountains over big bear. but the trail here has gone cold. after a three-day sweep of some 600 cabins, the only sign of the former lapd officer, and accused cop killer, were his foot prints which led nowhere, and his burntz-out truck. >> this is a deviant person who has the capacity, the knowledge, and i think is extremely creative. he has the police going

let me bring in miguel now. obviously, a lot of, we didn't get a lot of answers. put it that way. >> shockingly short press conference for as many questions there are hanging out there. clearly, a sensitive point for the sheriff's office about how those cabins were searched. literally, what is most shocking perhaps is that mr. dorner's truck broke down between the two ski valleys here. the cabin where these cleaners were going to clean it was less than a mile away. it was also across the street from the communications center and the command center that the sheriffs set up here. we spoke to people in that area who said that no one ever knocked on their door. no one ever asked if they saw anything strange. ever came around. the owners who owned that cabin apparently owneded several different cabins. why didn't police tell or sheriff's department tell individuals make sure your empty cabins are sewer. none of that happened and the guy was hiding literally right under their noses. shocking. >> and what's your feeling in terms of when we're going to get answers? partic
