dick durbin the senate's number two democrat joins us from chicago. tennessee republican bob corker is in chattanooga. gentlemen, while the president was meeting with members of congress, house republicans and senate democrats put out their budget plans which had dramatic differences. let's take a look at them. the gop plan would cut the deficit $4.6 trillion over ten years, all through spending cuts. the democratic plan would cut the deficit $1.8 trillion half through spending cuts and half through tax hikes. senator corker, let me start with you will senate republicans accept a tax increase if you get serious entitlement reform and cuts? >> i think senate republicans and all republicans want to see a 75 year solution to entitlements and i think republicans are joined in wanting to see tax reform so to the extent that generates revenues and how that is scored obviously that will be debated as we move ahead but i think all of us understand the real issues driving the deficit is in our o country are the entitlements. we want to see these available for

brown: apparently not, senator durbin. mr. durbin: is it also true that the seniors who get benefits under the affordable care act, for example, annual physicals that are available, that those will be eliminated as well? mr. brown: in my state and your state because your state is slightly larger than mine, over a million seniors in each state and hundreds of thousands in the presiding officer's state of wisconsin, millions of seniors have gone in, gotten -- gotten some kind of preventative care, got screenings for diabetes, screenings for osteoporosis and not paid a co-pay or deductible, gotten physicals and not had their co-pay or deductible waived as a result of the affordable care act. the cruz amendment would, while still protecting health insurance for senator cruz and others, would wipe away those benefits for seniors. mr. durbin: is it also not true that here in the united states capitol, we have an attending physician's office, run by the united states navy, a government entity, which makes itself available if each sen

durbin, and others in looking at the purchasing and trafficking of firearms. others have joined us in that bill including senator clow chew char, senator king, and i'll plan when we get on it i'll offer -- senator klobuchar. a substitute we find the provisions with the text of the leahy-collins bill. i reach out to the senators, those discussions bore fruit. the substitute incorporates a pending bills provision, and its creation of a specific crime for straw purchasing designed to prevent criminals from using straw purchasers who can pass a background check and then hand those firearms to the criminals. straw purchasers circumvent the purpose of the background check system, and we have found many -- everything from drug gangs to others who have used guns that the gang members could not have bought but the straw purchaser has. straw purchasing is done only to get a gun in the hands of somebody who is prohibited from having one. i think we need a meaningful solution to this problem. as substitute we include suggestions, senator gillibrand, to require those that

he said yeah, we would, and conversely, i asked dick durbin, would you accept entitlement reform if you got a tax increase, and he said yes. so in principle, at least, that's what you need for a grand bargain. of course, the devil is in the details. i think the single-most interesting thing, and you had a bit of it there, but he said it again in greater length, bob corker saying the key to the possibility of this happening is that barack obama has to get out and sell entitlement reform which is going to be a tough sale, but he has to go out and say the current situation, if you just continue medicare and social security the way they are, they're going to go out of business, that entitlement reform isn't a way to kill social security and medicare, it's a way to preserve them. and that will be very interesting to see. that's going to be a marker for republicans as to just how serious this president is about bringing democrats along to the table. >> yeah. how serious can the president be to actually at all about entitlement reform, and does that mean actual cuts? >> well, yeah. i mean, not

durbin: thank you very much, madam president. this is a photograph of a story in palatine called soccer plus. bob notrip had a pretty good business going and then he ran into something called show rooming. what that consists of is people who would walk into his store and say i'd like to try on a pair of shoes here or some equipment, they'd find exactly what they want, write down all the information and say thanks, bob. walk out, order it on the internet, and pay for it not paying sales tax on their purchase. so bob every time he tried to sell something and collect the sales tax in illinois which he was required to collect, was at a disadvantage. the people who were buying over the internet. is it fair? well, the supreme court said it's up to congress to decide if it's fair. it's up to congress to decide whether internet sales should be subject to state and local sales taxes. that's why we're here. and for my way of thinking this is just a question of fundamental fairness. we're not talking about imposing a new tax. not at all. we
