let's bring back our chief congressional correspondent dana bash up on capitol hill. it looks like they're getting stronger and stronger, the comments coming from some of the obama administration's critics as far as the way the information leading up to the boston marathon bombings are concerned. >> there's no question about it they're becoming stronger and stronger and frankly the reaction is becoming more and more partisan. i should tell you that i had a conversation with senate intelligence chairwoman dianne feinstein asking about system failures and she didn't let me finish my question. she does not believe there was "stove piping" going on meaning there wasn't a problem with agencies not sharing information, which of course was a big problem pre-9/11. but lindsey graham is saying of course the opposite. we should note he is somebody who has been as you've said a very strong critic of the obama administration. i talked to him after you just heard that for a while in the hallway. the point he was trying to make is that he believes -- suggested not so subtly that th

dana, what's his strategy here? >> his strategy is to get this deal done without antagonizing rush limbaugh and the others in the conservative base who are crucial if he is going to run for president in 2016, he is going to remain a major force in conservative politics there is little doubt, as senator schumer saying this thing is going forward f it doesn't go forward in the senate it is now going forward in the house of representatives. so, it's very unlikely that rubio, whatever he does is going to stop this from happening and he doesn't really want to stop it he just wants to appear tough while he is doing it. >> nervousness about it. the director of the center for immigration studies told the "washington post" this, "at some point, rubio will either have to lash himself to schumer or walk away from this thing. i'd bet my lunch, though maybe not my authority mortgamortgage end up waking away and say i tried in good faith, we made progress but the administration and democrats are unwilling to play ball." what's th

dana, you have the breaking news. a possible bipartisan compromise coming together on background checks. what more do you know? >> reporter: that's right. what i'm told is that these talks are considering expanding background checks which of course now just happen to licensed firearm dealers into two areas, gun shows and also internet sales. so what that would mean is it would leave out sales of guns person to person. so for example, if you were in your house and you wanted to sell a gun to me, that would not require a background check. but what i'm told is going to be included, at least is in these working discussions, is requiring that this background checks and sales, records are kept. that really is critical to supporters of new gun restrictions, because they say without that, the background check isn't enforceable and it is not possible to really trace these guns if they're used in a crime. so that is the crux of what is being discussed, but it is really just at this point between two critical senators, anderson.
