today it was much more than a game at boston's fenway park. good evening. i'm in for ama daetz who is on assign independent boston. with the sole surviving boston bombing suspect in custody in the hospital and in deep trouble, boston is trying to get back to normal. we begin with the latest developments in the boston bombings. we have a first look at the last moments of freedom for the second suspect. massachusetts police just released these images today. they show dzhokar tsarnaev wounded and widing in a boat just moments before he was captured yesterday. ♪ sweet caroline. >> neil diamond sang his "sweet caroline" a song sung at red sox home games. a sense of pride and loss emanated from the crowd. ama daetz joins us live from boston tonight with the story of a city's strength. >> ama: i'm standing here at one of the barricades on boylston street, and just to my right here is the area that been shut down all week after the bombings monday morning. today, saturday, boston is coming back alive, now that the second beening suspect has been captured. >> won'

many hotels around there, the lenox hotel, more hotels behind you, fenway park is not far away. important to note, this is a state holiday, patriots day. every year the event is run, red sox have a game every year. just a block is newbury street, a huge shopping area. thousands there for the marathon, thousands enjoying the day off from school, from work for shopping, the towers there, the northern end of boston's financial district, steps away from everything historical and cultural in boston. that part of the street is host to restaurants and offices, starbucks there, camera store there. every time i'm back home, you make your way down there because of how important it is, how central it is to the culture, restaurant, and sporting life of boston. thousands of people here for this event every year. as you see the chaos unfolding there, another thing to note, again, speculation, but if you were someone who came up to do this and wanted to get away, you can go back from that side of the barrier to newbury street very quickly, or there's a subway that runs underneath that takes yo

believe in boston at fenway park, it was hard not to be part of the red sox nation today. the heroes of boston this weekend, everybody wearing a police uniform. they're the ones who hunted. motorcade left boston medical center and brought his body out we snaked through alice and back lots to get to within a couple hundred yards of the boat. during negotiations, there was a word of reassurance. and an appeal to someone they knew was in pain. as we shot this exclusive video, police rushed us, saying we were in the crossfire zone. >> clear out, okay? come on, i said please. >> reporter: it was just minutes later that police captured tsarnaev. he had lost blood, was weakened. the entire neighborhood had been on lock down, residents terrified as law enforcement went door to door. after the standoff, we spoke with neighbors. here on cypress street, this is one of the houses where police were combing through the neighborhood, looking for the suspect. this is eddie beck's house, he took us through what it was like when s.w.a.t. teams came through here. >> they came in. they search

they're playing at fenway park, boston red sox after postponing friday's game. but the investigation continues. now that the surviving suspect is in custody at a boston area hospital, however, 19-year-old dzhokhar tsarnaev did not give up without a fight. [ gunfire ] he and police exchanged gunfire as tsarnaev held police at bay in a watertown, massachusetts backyard. here is a cbs news photograph. he used a boat to shield himself in the final standoff. police say he was wounded, covered with blood. he was rushed to the hospital where he is now under guard. earlier we got the inside story on how the capture went down. wolf blitzer talked with the police chief of watertown in a revealing conversation. let's take a brief listen. >> we had a couple thousand police officers on scene. the turnout was incredible, the support from the state and the region. we had the tactical people to close that seam down and secure it. we did take our time to make sure that everybody was safe in the neighborhood. and eventually used flash bangs. >> what is that? >> it is a loud compr

kreg boss well outside fenway park and boston's mayor no doubt wants to get his city back to normal. he says he had a way to do it. what is it? >> good evening. there's a number of things he wants to do as quickly as possible. one is getting boil ton street open again. there is a 6 block area in a is shut down that is still a crime scene. they talked about a 5 part plan in order to get that portion to get all of it reopened. they have to do bio hazard testing and environmental testing. they have to go through and do some structural testing make sure all of the structures are safe there. they will have to remove debris there. remember there's still blast debris and people who left all of their items there. they have to flush the hydrants through. step 4 will be re-entry among the businesses to get their businesses reopened and of course will be the reopening to everyone there along boilton street and each end of boyleton street on each block there is memorials on each side of those. they will have to remove the memorials and make memorials for those eventually. >> i am sure you are ou

the rocks play at fenway park today and they won and started off as a great day in boston. then, all eyes turned to the finish line at the marathon. at 2:50 this afternoon, 4:09 in to the race, what the "the boston globe" recorded at ground level. a sudden blast in front of spectators, volunteers and police officers. then seconds later, a second blast. and the remnants of the scene suddenly show a mass casualty event. tonight, the death toll stands at three, including an 8-year-old. over 100 others were treetded for injuries. the race was stopped mid route. thousands of people pushed through the streets as the streets were closed off behind them. bostonians were told not to come out, stay in their homes and avoid crowds and the investigation began immediately while security was heightened across the country. we begin tonight with the latest on this day from nbc's dennis murphy. >> reporter: a sharp bang, then seconds later, two blocks away -- another explosion. a plume of thick, gray smoke spiraled up over boylston street marking the two spots virtually the finish line wher

craig boswell outside fenway park for us in boston. craig, boston's mayor no doubt wants to get his city back to normal. he says he has a way to do it. what is it? >> right. good evening to you, harris. there's a number of things that he wants to do, and certainly wants to do them as quickly as possible. one is getting boylston street fully open again. there's still a six-block area still shut down, still a crime scene. they talked about a five-part plan in order to get that portion -- to get all of that reopened. number one, they'll have to do biohazard testing there, environmental testing. they'll have to go through and do structural testing, making sure structures are safe. they'll have to remove debris, blast debris, people that left items there. they'll have to flush the hydrants through. step four is a limited reentry of some of the businesses along there, so they can get their businesses ready to open, and then the reopening to everyone there along boylston street. there are memorials on both sides. they'll have to remove the me

you'll get 35,000 people spilling out of fenway park, which is about six city blocks from the finish line on boylston street where thousands upon thousands of people gather to root home their relatives, their friends to see cross the finish line. today, it's a day when the entire city wears a smile. no one goes to work, schoolins e out, kids are abundant within the city. as you indicated, shortly after the winners finish the marathon, normal people come across with their relatives and friends waiting for them and cheering them on. there were two explosions. i speak to an eyewitness standing on the boylston street at the finish line, about 50 yards to his right he heard the first explosion, saw the first explosion and estimates within 10 to 15 seconds later to his left, about 50 yards across the street heard a second explosion that. would place both explosions within about 30 seconds of one another in about a two-block city radius. the explosions appear to be set at low level, on the sidewalk, perhaps in a trash can. that's speculation. perhaps in a mailbox. speculation because they r
