lillian carter was -- she's another one that i feel confident that jimmy carter could never have been elected president had it not been for his mother. the reason i say that is that from her earliest days, she was totally open-minded on race. and in south georgia, that was not an easy thing. jimmy carter said that his mother -- he said, my mother had no -- knew no color line. and that was implanted in him. his father was a classic georgia segregationist who died before the supreme court decision. her -- she was a great baseball fan. her great hero in 1947, that early, was jackie robinson. now in plains, georgia, that was not a popular hero. but that's how strongly she felt about the racial equality and tolerance. and without that, he could not have been nominated, much less elected. >> james earl carter sr., what was he like? >> he was a very successful peanut warehouseman and farmer. very much a man of his place and his time. he was very glad that his son went to annapolis. that was jimmy carter's dream from the time he was 6 years old, which was quite amazing. earl carter was a lead

that was a un convention and signed by then president jimmy carter. anybody remember jimmy carter? it's never been ratifyed in the u.s. senate and states have ratified it, signed it with the exception of the united states, so in 1998 women of san francisco said that is not good enough. we're going to create our own ordinance reflecting this international bill of rights for women. next slide. so in terms of work place you will hear a little bit more from our policy director ann lehmas who is going to step in for someone who had a last minute something come up but we launched this initiative together with cal vert investments and a human rights monitoring organization to help our employers create gender equitable work places, and for that work ann and i went to miland italy to receive an award from the italian government for the international work life balance award. we also work for working mothers. we working on lactation accumulations and guidelines in what employers have to do with moms and accommodating them and we're are putting together a brochure on family leave policy. next

jimmy carter, president jimmy carter was the first president to make humans rights a cornerstone of u.s. foreign policy. tell me about your conversation with president carter. >> one of the things that interested me, he was--what he said about impunity, where he said that he varied a bit from more pure rights activists. he said he wasn't necessarily opposed to giving wretched dictators impunity if it meant that they would step down sooner. they were afraid of being prosecuted by the international criminal court, and because of that they're not willing to give up. they stay and they fight. but if you gave them impunity, and you were not going to prosecute them, they might be willing to step down sooner and save more people sooner. >> michael: it's a cut your loses type of a policy. >> yes more practical. >> michael: it seems that way. let's move to representative john lewis. he's a really spiritual man. how were you able to capture this through your photography? >> i think he simply gave it to me. we had a wonderful conversation first. i interviewed him for the text that accompanies each

carter. danielle leigh joins us live. it's an historic day there, no doubt. >> reporter: richard good morning. it really is at the george w. bush museum and library looks magnificent as the sun begins to rise in dallas. the stage has been set. you can take a look. there are thousands of chairs laid out. people have been working for days getting ready for the ceremony. 8,000 people expected to attend, as you mentioned all five presidents here to honor the former president george w. bush and his legacy. this gives a thorough examination of his time in office, many of the crises he faced. for instance, the september 11th terror attacks, the war on terror, the aftermath of hurricane katrina and the financial crisis but also domestic policies that were important to him such as education and the no child left behind initiative that he established. it also allows people to really develop their opinions about this president. one of my favorite parts of this museum is the decision theater where people

should we send jimmy carter? bill clinton? an ex-president? >> i don't want any misinterpretation of the comments that i made. somebody asked me if we're willing to talk and the answer is yes, we're willing to talk. but obviously under the right circumstances. >> under the right circumstances, could an envoy make a difference? >> not unless they indicate that they're prepared to move in the directions that everybody has made clear they need to move in. we're not going to go through the sameç cycle here. if someone visits on their own and there's some discussion and contributes a dialogue, so be it. the government to government, the government of united states has made clear what our position is. and the north korea understands full well what they need to do. not that hard. if they tend to be compliant and intend to engage in a serious negotiation, that door is open. they know what they need to do in order to do so. >> traveling with you, i know just how powerfully you feel the loss of ann smedinghof. i want to know what you say to her family

you saw jimmy carter getting up and finding something really positive to say about george w. bush. about sudan, about pepfar. bill clinton, the gracefulness of all of these other leaders. what was your impression being there? >> i think somebody was passing out the sodium pentothal the past couple of days. you had george w. bush the former president say, you know dick cheney saying i don't see him much. that was a firestorm. that was a great get for him and from the former first lady, we've had enough bushes, that's like eisenhower saying about nixon, give me two weeks and i'll think something he's helped me with. that was an undercut. and wonderfully bill saying the eternal effort of former presidents to rewrite history. what an absolute statement about what this is all about. all of these lee brieres are that very thing to try to write history your way. i thought it was an amazing candor day, except for the one thing we never mentioned, which is probably the reason we didn't mention it, iraq. the word was never spoken out of courtesy. >> well, david i want to -- let me ask you ab
