sky news's katie stallard has more. katie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. yes, we knew that tamerlan traveled to russia in january of last year, they husband with in the country for around six months and during the time he eled to caucasus region. that area might not be popular to all of your viewers but it's a particularly volatile region. it's where russia is saying they're fighting their own war on terror which started as an armed separatist movement, the goal of which is to establish an independent islam estate in the region. now, tamerlan's family say he was simply there visiting his relatives and he was helping his father around the house, but the authorities will now be looking very carefully at who he met with while he was there and whether any of the militant groups in that region provided any of the information or the ideology behind these attacks. anne-marie? >> katie, before you go, do you know if the russian government has helped the u.s. with any of this investigation? >> russia has said it stands ready to assist the u.s. investigation if need

let's go to katy tur who made her way up there. as i understand it there are 15 blocks that are virtually frozen. people have been told to shelter in place and once they go out, avoid crowds which is tricky on this day which is a holiday every year. >> reporter: it's pretty tricky in this area, brian. this is the back bay of boston. it is a popular area. it is a busy area on a normal day. it is chaotic here during the marathon in a good way. it's celebratory. the bars are open. people are out. right now there are people here. they want to see what's going on. i guess they are trying not to congregate. for the most part it's quiet for this area. after the explosion there were streams of people walking the streets. the subways were shut down and because of that, people had to walk for miles in some cases to their destination. in fact, we are two blocks from the finish line. two blocks from where the explosions happened. we saw a woman right over here, witnesses saw her stumbling to this block with shrapnel wounds. nbc has confirmed s

katie, there is some movement, what are you seeing? >> we are seeing most of the spectators are moving out -- sorry, i have mixed mics in my hear. the media looks like it is allowed it stay right now. we did see two department of homeland security trucks with lights flashing. we did hear reports they were trying to evacuate the area. my gut is saying, since there was not a media move, there were too many reports. there was a report that a suspect wad arrested. reports that msnbc said not true. fbi says not true. and boston police department said, is not true. people a lot of people heard that so you have people coming down to the courthouse to see what is going on. when you see 50 or so news trucks gathered around a courthouse, you get curious and want to know what it happening. is a crowd of about 500 people gathered. it looks like they are making spectators leave. but the media is not moving pch you are seeing cameras, reportsers, everybody is still there. the courthouse is where we expect somebody would be taken if they do have some
