what happened in newtown can happen anywhere. in any instant, any dad in america could be in my shoes. no one should feel the pain. no one should feel our pain or the pain felt by the tens of thousands of people who have lost loved ones to senseless gun violence. that's why we're here. two weeks ago 12 of us from newtown came to meet with u.s. senators and have a conversation about how to bring common sense solutions to the issues of gun violence. we came with a sense of hope, optimistic that real conversation could begin that would ultimately save the lives of so many americans. we met with dozens of democrats and republicans and shared with them pictures of our children, spouses, parents who lost their lives on december 14th. expanded background checks wouldn't have saved our loved ones but, still, we came to support a bipartisan proposal from two senators, both with a ratings from the nra. a common sense proposal supported by 90% of americans is a proposal that will save lives without interfering with the rights of responsible

that's how some people in newtown learned about it ahead of time. the local paper there in newtown, connecticut credited a critic with tv line with giving the community a heads up and they ran a story ahead of the episode warning parents what was coming. but you know that wasn't enough for some of the newtown residents like parent of a student at the school who survived the shooting. he spoke with cnn this morning. here he is. >> we have no problem at least the parents i have spoken to that they aired an episode that had a school shooting. it's reality. it happened. it happened here. it happened at columbine. it happened in many other places. what's really upsetting is that no one, none of the producers reached out to the town of newtown to let us residents who are so close to this know that this episode was airing. >> you know, fred, it's a little bit of a tough line for producers and networks to walk here. on one hand you want tor very sensitive about the feelings of the family in newtown. but on the other hand there are unfortunately a lot of peo

the president calling newtown families as well today. do you believe, sir, writ not for these families showing up on capitol hill, the way they did, flying from connecticut to washington, d.c. with the president and also, standing there reading the names of their loved ones and what they were calling their own filibuster, do you believe that is the reason this filibuster was averted? >> the newtown families really played a remarkable, maybe unprecedented role in this debate. i met with them off and on over this period. of course, i've come to know them over these last four months, very, very closely. truly extraordinary strength and courage to have borne this loss and now make it their life's work to save others from similar losses has really impressed and turned the tide in this debate. remember that just four months ago, gun violence was thought to be untouchable politically. just four days ago. we thought that 60 votes were unreachable. and these families being here, looking them in the eye and asking for their vote has played a profo

people live in newtown, because it is a great place to raise a family. that is why we moved there. both of my kids went to sandy hook elementary. my wife is a 6th grade teacher in town, two of the students killed that day lived in my small neighborhood. the gunman and his mother lived a street over from us. one of these precious children killed hawkly whose mother is here today lived across the street from the gunman. last friday would have been dillon's 7th birthday. it was a snow day, i was traveling and my wife and children were home but i received a text message from them rather than building a snow man out of a foot of snow that had fallen, they build a cup cake and with food coloring colored the icing purple which has dillan's favorite color. 13-year-old, children, and the boy, first grader across the street whose face is on the cover of the new york times on december 15th, they should be building snow men, they should not be building memorials. to lose so many people who are young so quickly in such a mall town, it is impossible to get your mind around it, there is just too

you see him there in hartford, connecticut, just 40 miles from the newtown shooting. pressing lawmakers to punch through the stalemate and pass something on gun control. he's laid out an ambitious agenda after newtown, but much has been blocked, and resistance is growing. so as the president scrambles for a compromise, he's taking dramatic steps. when he leaves connecticut tonight, 11 relatives of the newtown victims will join him on air force one. they'll make their case to congress tomorrow face to face. a last ditch, intensely human pitch. abc's chief white house correspondent, jonathan karl, starts us off. >> reporter: the president portrayed his gun plan as a moral imperative. >> this is not about me. this is not about politics. this is about doing the right thing for all the families who are here that have been torn apart by gun violence. it's about them. and all the families going forward, so we can prevent this from happening again. >> reporter: he invokes the memory of those gunned down in newtown four months ago.

>>chris: on guns, just newtown the president said he would use, told the families of newtown, the victims, he would use all of the powers of his presidency to push for new gun control to try to prevent more massacres. as the senate takes up the bill, maybe this week, the ban on assault weapons is dead, a plan to limit the size of the high-capacity magazines is in great trouble, and even the idea, although it has broad public support, of expanding ground checks is in trouble. question: why has the president been so ineffective in pushing his plan? >> well, this needs to be made clear, the president pushed hard in denver last week. he is headed to connecticut on monday to make the case. he has brought the american people to his side like you cite, and 90 percent of americans support expanded background checks. you cannot get 90 percent of members to agree on the weather. the question is, is congress going to listen to the american people and dot right thing? >>chris: you blame republicans but i put up what harry reid, the senate majority leader, said talking about senator feinstein's plan t

for them, we are all newtown and let us choose love. they are not the first t to perh in a mass killing well-known to america and their names are now engraved in our memories so that we merely need to say them to evoke the grief and tears -- aurora, tucson, virginia tech. all of those names and others. they are likely not to be the last, and nothing we are doing here will end entirely the plague of gun violence. we will not solve the whole problem because there is no single solution or even necessarily a set of solutions that we're debating today that will end all the tragic bloodshed. but we can save lives. we can make a start. we can literally stop a major part of it with commonsense measures that evoke common ground. with a background check system, we can stop criminals and felon, dangerously mentally ill, domestic abusers and others who should not have gun from buying firearms and using them as weapons of war. we can, with a ban on illegal trafficking, stop felons and other criminals from trading and transporting guns across state l

newtown. no question about it it tore up the heart of the american people and challenge our conscience to do everything in our power to prevent gun violence. the legislation that is moving forward in a senate, and hopefully we will have something similar in the house is about background checks, which i think would have been very important. ending of a gun trafficking to keep guns out of the hands of people, all of that, and issued initiatives for school safety. i think if you just want to focus on one thing, initiatives for school safety might have protected those children a lot better. how can we ever not act upon the killing of 20 little children around 6-years-old for similar situations and gun violence in our country by having a responsible, responsible background checks and responsible gun ownership and the precautions taken to prevent it from happening again. but, again it is a tall order. >> you can watch this online at c-span.org. the senate earlier today approved 68-31 to the date gun

this is what newtown kindness is about. it's encouraging children to do their own acts of kindness like charlotte did and submit their stories through drawings and letters to the organization, and newtown kindness is going to show some light on all of these little wonderful things that kids do every day in the same way that charlotte did for the kids she loved and the family members she loved and for the animals that she loved. let me talk a little bit about another teacher. rachel davino. rachel was very much like victoria in that she knew that she wanted to work with kids. she had a lot of interests, rachel davino did. she was born in waterbury, received her undergraduate degree from hartford, and she loved animals. that's probably why she connected with a lot of these kids. she loved animals, she loved baking, photography and karate. she drew lots of things. loved to draw animals, dogs, frogs, anything with scales or feathers or fur, she loved to draw. but her passion was really working as a behavioral therapist, working
