frank somerville is off tonight. >> i am julie haener. a 30-year-old woman was charged with child neglect and abuse after police say she left her baby alone in the car in the mid-day heat. ktvu's health and science editor john fowler is live now with the dangerous situation she is accused of putting her child into. john? >> reporter: it happened after noon here at the square mall. police made an arrest of the mother after witnessed called 911. they found an unattended baby in distress inside the car. >> all they heard was a baby crying. they looked in the car and saw her skin was flush with tears. >> the baby was sweating. police found the mother shopping. >> she knew the child was there and said the windows was down. >> reporter: in court today the lawyer said one car window was down 4 inches. the temperature 76 degrees. i asked san francisco state heat stress scientists for his opinion. >> 105 degrees. after just 20 minutes temperatures could be fatal for a child. >> reporter: the baby was unhurt but 32 u.s. children died of heat stroke

. >> and i am frank somerville. >> a press conference wrapped up in boston with new information and the headline is a third person died, 130 injured. we are now in our 6th hour of continuing coverage. we are speaking to residents impacted by this tragedy. we begin with ktvu's eric rasmussen who is in the news room, covering the bombings since shortly after noon about an explosion near the boston marathon. >> reporter: you want to talk headlines, another one is the fbi has now taken over the lead in this investigation. there are reports from emergency rooms in boston tonight that doctors have pulled ball bearings from some of the victims and tonight we have video showing a photographer's view standing right there at the finish line. seconds later there was a second blast. thousands of people crowded into that area near the finish line on boylston street. that was before 3:00 p.m. boston time this afternoon. we have learned an 8-year-old boy is one of the three confirmed dead. children's hospital reported treating four other children injured. several news agencies were reporting a person

before that, he was a civilian employee with the somerville police department. we're learning new details of the condition of the surviving marathon bombing suspect that shut down the surrounding boston area during a massive search. right now we know the surviving suspect, nineteen- year-old johar tsar-neye-ev, is in serious but stable condition and is unable to communicate, yet. he is recovering at a boston hospital guarded by armed officers. tsarnaev was captured last night inside a boat parked in a watertown backyard. these are images of that boat. the suspect's uncle, says the 19 year old was quote "used" by his 26 year old brother, tamerlan tsarnaev. but the hierarchy in the bombing plot is still unclear. we are also learning that federal public defenders have agreed to represent the surviving suspect. the office set to represent the suspect says a lawyer should be appointed as soon as possible because there are "serious issues regarding possible interrogation." now that dzhokar tsarnaev is in custody the world is waiting to see what's next for the 19-year-

. >> good evening everyone, i'm frank somerville. >> and i'm julie haener. tonight the investigation into that deadly attack is reaching full speed as the realization slowly takes hold that innocent americans even children have once again come under attack on u.s. soil. we have team coverage tonight. ktvu's deborah villalon has been exploring one theory about the person responsible. but we begin in the newsroom with ken wayne and the kitchen appliance used to make those bombs. >> reporter: investigators have made significant progress in the 34 hours since the attacks. they've determined who pressure cookers were used as bombs. investigators combing the blast area say they determined the items used in the bombs. they found the remains of a pressure cooker. they also recovered this pack it apparently contained one of the crude devices. >> it was determined that both the explosives were placed in a dark colored nylon bag or backpack. the bag would have been heavy because of the components believed to be in it. >> reporter: a boston tv station showed this imagin
