russia had asked the united states to check up on tamerlan tsarnaev and also on his mother. this is a woman who told cnn last night, the blood was paint, that this entire thing was a hoax and her son was framed. so very deranged things. >> when russia contacted the fbi we investigated them for four months. we didn't find any information or any type of evidence that would show he was radicalized. after four months, we stopped the investigation. there was no more evidence there. during that period of time, we asked russia three times to give us more information and they never got back. as far as the mother is concerned, she's relevant. again, what happened when she went -- when tamerlan went back to russia? things changed when he came back. it seemed he was different. his personality was different. he had became a lot more orthodox in his religion. so this is another avenue hopefully russia will work with us. >> you're talking about the fbi and the cia and the question whether the ball was dropped anywhere. we do know now for a fact that tsarnaev was on three counterterrorism

tamerlan tsarnaev had a video of him on his youtube channel. we're not sure if the two men met face-to-face during his visit in russia. we're following the developments from the capital of dagestan. >> this abu dujan and a video tamerlan posted on his youtube file. they killed him last september and we don't know if he ever met tsarnaev. pakistani police revealed to cnn this small time militant ran training camps for bomb making that foreigners came to. three images of abu dujan's group training in the woods. this one explains how to mix and prepare homemade explosives almost anywhere. and the group's pictures suggest they learned to use a mobile phone addss a detonator. the militant trained foreigners. >> translator: we do not have audio or visual confirmation but we do have information concerning that abu dujan met with foreigners. >> what do foreigners learn in the woods? >> translator: i can't talk about the number of foreigners but they met to exchange their experience. there are dagestani's who have taken citizenship elsewhere to come her

one between tamerlan tsarnaev and this canadian boxer, who was a muslim convert. he fled his home in 2012 to fight against russian authorities. then he died in a shootout, but a very similar parallel story to tamerlan, who was also a boxer, who had come over here to america and then went back to dagestan and we know what happened after that. but similar parallels and at the same time, the russian authorities say, a connection of possible meetings between tamerlan and this quite infamous dagestani jihadist, mahmoud nadal. what do you read into these two connections that may have been established? >> i think those are both very significant and the problem is right now we're dependent on russian intelligence authorities for these stories right now. what the russians, what we know now is that some, possibly some meetings happened in russia. everyone looking at this case knew -- knows now that those six or seven months are significant to figuring out does this case lead to a sort of radicalization and training by tamerlan when he's there, he brings that information bac

and tamerlan tsarnaev had a youtube account where he posted links to videos. one was called terrorists and it linked to this man. it was deleted. we have since tracked it down, and i can play you now some of that video showing this man who also appeared to have a nickname for a man. he was killed not far from where i'm standing in december in a firefight with russian special forces. they brought in an armored personnel carrier, in fact, to carry out that attack. and video was shown of an extreme firefight. typical of many of the clashes between militants in this region and the police. what is the connection to boston. there was a link from the youtube account to the video. what we cannot say is if tamerlan tsarnaev and this man, now deceased, effort met, but mr. tsarnaev's parents, his father, live there, and he was himself here only last year for at least a month according to witnesses there. there is apparently now the first connection, it seems, between the alleged boston bomber suspect and extremist groups here. for some reason, mr. tsarnaev posted a link

tamerlan tsarnaev told one interviewer he aspired to box on the u.s. olympic team, but that dream stalled after his petition for citizenship was denied. this is the mixed martial arts gymnasium in austin, massachusetts, where tamerlan used to work out. he was said to not have a lot of respect for trainers at other gyms because their language was foul, they weren't supposed to be clean. he would work out here a lot. he was rar regarded as one of if not the best boxer here, though his nose was broken a few years ago here. he disappeared ushgs but' reappeared a few weeks ago, he walked around as if he owned the place, was asked to leave because he was being disrespectful to others working out at the gym. in fact, just a few days ago, law enforcement came by and took the surveillance equipment from this gym in part of their investigation. one fellow boxer with whom we spoke told us tsarnaev struck an intimidating figure in the gym, calling him a premier athlete with a reputation as a beast, an animal in the ring. trainer eddie bishop traveled with tsarnaev

they're looking at the wife of the suspect tamerlan tsarnaev. how many different ways can dna get on a device like this? >> well it could be put there by somebody in the shop from which he bought it, i guess. it could be put by somebody who is handling it in some other way. or even, i guess, it could be put there by a victim of the bomb itself, in that the fragment may have connected with somebody, and left their dna on it. so there are various possibilities as to how it got on there. >> of course one of the things they're trying to look into is if this woman, katherine russell, the wife, what she may have known in the days leading up to or after the attacks. one of the things she says is that she doesn't speak russian well so she wasn't aware of whatever conversation tamerlan tsarnaev may or may not have been having. but how realistic is it to suggest that she knew nothing about what was going on there? >> well, it's not surprising that he was married and had a small child, because that actually is a feature of several people who've committed t
