outside of waco, texas. earlier there was an explosion at a fertilizer plant that happened around 750 two p.m., about 8:50 p.m. eastern time. we don't know the casualties of injuries or possible fatalities. we are hearing reports of possibly hundreds of injured and up to two dead. those are preliminary reports and are not confirmed. the blast was felt as far as 15 miles away and could be heard as far as 45 miles away. at this time, officials have a lingering concerns about air quality in the area. they are asking residents to stay indoors to avoid the possibility of coming into contact with toxic fumes. the fire continues to burn. it not only did damage to the plant but damage to surrounding buildings. reports that a nursing home and a middle school were also damaged in this explosion that occurred at a fertilizer plant near waco, texas. again, we don't have a number on casualties or fatalities, but the reports are that there could be possibly hundreds injured. officials have set up a triage area in a field

that breaking news is out of texas. there have been at least two explosions at a fertilizer plant in the city of west, texas. 80 miles south of dallas. there have been mass casualties. explosions hit before 8:00 central time. we first broke this story at the 6:00 news. hospitals are treating up to 100 people injured. i have heard reports that as many as 40 of those people have very serious injuries. the injured suffered what doctors call blast injuries. injuries to their legs and arms and cuts and bruises. a hazardous materials team is at the plant. there is an evacuation order for the area which includes a school and nursing home. there are reports the nursing home and apartment complex are on fire. a witness says he saw smoke and then the first explosion and it was like a bomb going off the witness says. right now, first responders are on the scene to treat the injured and deal with the damaged plant. investigators will continue to try to figure out what happened but the immediate priority is to treat the injured and

tragedy in texas. >> treating the wounded and >>> that breaking news is in texas in the city where a fertilizer plant exploded. >> hundreds of hurt taken to a football field turned into a triage center. >> several people have been killed in this massive blast and fire that raged for hours. >> this blast has rocked the sound of west, a community 80 miles south of dallas. john alston is monitoring the latest developments from the newsroom. >> the danger has not passed as fumes are lingering in the area and an emergency room doctor said earlier at least two emt firefighters had been killed. officials expect many more fatalities. are more than a hundred people have been hurt and taken to local hospitals. the flames were already raging and firefighters were pouring water on the fertilizer plants when disaster struck. the massive explosion could be felt more than 40 miles away. in the immediate area the results are devastating. the mayor of west texas believes 60 to 80 homes are leveled or seriously damaged. >> i can tell you i was there. i walked to the blast area and searched some houses

many of them to waco, texas. they also got a great deal of assistance in terms of emergency responders. and from as far away as dallas and ft. worth. they got so much assistance, that officials over the course of the evening, had to tell them to stop coming to stop sending assistance. we're hearing from some hospitals of the nature of the injuries we've seen in this. it ranges, everything from minor cuts and abrasions to burns. we're waiting to hear on the number of fatalities. we have david scott, who is live in west, texas, for more on the story. david, what can you tell us what's happening on the ground there? >> reporter: well, right now, the wait is for dawn in the next couple of hours. that will make the relief and recovery efforts a lot better. we're told that roughly 100 people are injured, more or less. most taken to the medical center in waco. they're not giving out fatality counts. rumors it's fairly high. they want to be sure of the numbers. and they have a lot of rubble yet to go through. >> david, a

the texas national guard is monitoring the air in and around the town of west, texas. it's not clear how many people have been exposed to this kind of ammonia. the gas coming from this fertilizer plant. it's a gas used to make fertilizer at the plant. buti but its fumes can be very dangerous. suffocating, can cause blistering, can cause chemical burns if it stays in the body. this is a serious situation, elizabeth cohen, medical correspondent. senior medical correspondent, talk a little bit about the impact of the gas from this kind of fertilizer plant. >> right. we know a lot about this gas, it's often involved in explosions. when crystal meth labs explode, that's ammonia. what it is, if you get a huge big whiff of it and are you exposed to it a lot over time, even quickly it can kill you. however, if you don't get too much of it, get out to the fresh air quickly, you can be perfectly fine. it really depends on how much you breathe in. listen to the press conferences. it seems like they are more dealing with the results of the explosion, not so much the results of the

but we have breaking news tonight out of texas. just a few hours ago, there was a tremendous explosion at a fertilizer plant just north of waco. >> i can't hear, i can't hear! get out of here, please get out of here! please get out of here! please get out of here! please get out of here! >> you can get a sense of the tremendous force that was released in that explosion. the fertilizer plant blowing up. witnesses saw a fireball 100 feet in the air resolving itself into a towering cloud over the plains of texas. we are hearing that more than 170 people have been injured, more than 20 of those critically. told by police in the area that there are fatalities, confirmed fatalities. they don't want to give us the exact number at this point. that explosion that you just saw registered a 2.1 on the rick administer scale, according to the usgs. just a devastating explosion. the department of public safety in texas is telling us that somewhere between 70 and 100 buildings nearby were completely devastated. among those buildings an apartment

about 20 miles from waco, texas. a fertilizer plant explosion earlier this evening has reportedly injured hundreds. we don't have a number of fatalities, but officials have confirmed that there are in fact fatalities. the force of that blast could be felt as far as 70 miles away. we do have some new information coming in. governor rick perry has reported that he has "mobilized state resources to help local authorities" and that they are monitoring developments and gathering information as details continue to emerge about this incident. that plant was already on fire prior to the explosion this evening when the explosion happened. a texas department of public safety official says "the fertilizer plant was on fire. firefighters were on the scene. there was an explosion followed by a second explosion. of course the fact that firefighters were on scene responding to that fire when the explosion took place has raised a number of concerns about their safety and well-being. now, aside from the human toll, the damage is also
