the commonwealth of massachusetts. it has been delayed for more than an hour but as you know details, developments have been changing by the minute here. it all started at about 5:00pm eastern time last evening when the fbi released photos of two men, suspects, in connection with the bombing at the boston marathon on monday. at about 5:00pm the fbi said that they actually had video of one of those two men actually dropping a bomb or dropping a backpack i should say that later exploded. that suspect is the man you see on -- in the white hat on the right of your screen, he has been identified as dzhokhar tsarnaev a 19-year-old who was apparently working in concert with his older brother, tamerlan tsarnaev, the guy in the black hat. tamerlan tsarnaev is dead now. authorities at the hospital said that he hhat they call bullet holes in his body they were not able to count them but it is also believed that some of what peered his body after a confrontation with police may have been shrapnel from a bomb that these men were ca

we received those from the massachusetts state police. amazing pictures that we're receiving from them. it illustrates a technology that they had. when they got a tip there might be someone in the boat, the suspect sent up the hopper with thermal imaging equipment and it it showed that there was something in that boat because of the heat that was being generated. so that's the picture of form that you see colored in white and eventually in black where they can make out detail. after doing that, they were able to send in a robot with a long arm that was able to pick up the tarp on top of the boat. of course, that told the tale they knew for sure that that suspect was in there and that's when they sent in the s.w.a.t. team and tried to talk him out. there was an exchange of gunfire and the arrest was made. >> what a conclusion. susan candiotti outside the hospital now where the suspect dzhokhar tsarnaev intubated, sedated and officials waiting, hoping they can talk to him soon. susan, thanks very much. >> the suspect's uncle is speaking out

state police, the massachusetts state police, atf, and others responded to the scene. many of them were already there as part of the general security for the marathon already in place. the first step law enforcement took was to secure the physical area around the blast for the purpose of preserving the evidence in the area related to the devices itself. this morning, the fbi, along with boston pd, massachusetts state police and atf officially began the forensic evidence recovery at the site. their goal was to recover physical items related to the blast. those items have been recovered, and are being sent to the fbi's laboratory in quantico, virginia. the examiners there will reconstruct the device and determine the makeup and components. among the items recovered are pieces of black nylon which could be pieces of a backpack, and what appeared to be fragments of bee-bee's and nails partially contained in the device. we are delivering this to our lab in virginia for a complete authnd and, thorough analysis. in addition, the items were placed in a dark colored nylon backp

how do you run the dragnet in watertown, massachusetts or boston, massachusetts or to close the highways on the outskirts of town to make sure if he has transportation, if he has a car whether he has it -- has his own or whether he carjacks a vehicle how do you track him down and make sure he is not out of the area here? this area is loaded with fbi, s.w.a.t, national guard, state and local police. >> that is is a very good question. what they are going to do at this poit is they are setting up the command post as you reported on and molly reported. what they are going to do is formulate all of the officers. remember you have to coordinate all of the law enforcement efforts from the fin, the jttf, the alcohol, tobacco and firearms. , state police and local officers from boston and transit and ems. remember you need planses standing by in case somebody else gets hurt and the fire department because these guys are known to have explosives. all of this has to be coordinated at the same time you are marking off the radius to catch this guy. you also don't want to give him a method of escape.

the other, known as suspect number two in the white hat is on the run in the watertown, massachusetts, area. both of these suspects wound up there after a series of events that started at about 10:00 local time last night in cambridge, massachusetts, on the campus of massachusetts institute of technology involved the shooting of an officer there, a car jacking, and then the two individuals moved to the watertown area where there was another confoptation of the watertown police. this suspect now on the run across the area. as a result, the mbta, which is a major u.s. transit system serving the entire greater boston area has been shut down. according to its website, the mbta is the nation's fifth largest mass transit system serving an area of more than 3,000 square miles. the m.i.t. campus, despite reassuring faculty, students, professors there that the situation is safe, is shut down today and is mourning the death of one of its police officers. we can also tell you president obama was briefed overnight. on the series of events by lisa moniker, assistant for homeland security and count

in cambridge, massachusetts. the gunman asked "did you hear about the boston explosion? i did that." he then commandeered car, took the driver hostage, then stopped ed pick up a second person." they robbed the hostage of $45 and his a.t.m. card. ten the two assailants stopped at a convenience store the victim escaped and called police. a short time later a watertown officer spotted the vehicle and a vicious gun fight with police ensued. u.v.rlan tsarnaev was killed. umped other fled in the s.u.v. dthe car a few blocks away and then was captured 19 hours later hing in a boat behind a nearby house. he was suffering gunshot wounds to the head, neck, legs, and hand. nd anyigators have not found any evidence to date that the brothers are connected to a foreign or domestic terror boup, but the f.b.i. is taking a new look at tamerlan's travels to russia last year. his family says he was just there on a personal visit but cnvestigators want to know if he had contact at all with islamic radicals. e pelley: bob, we now know that 2011 assian government back in r 11 asked the f.b.i.

that moved over to watertown, massachusetts and one of the two suspects in the watertown, massachusetts incident has been apprehended by police. that is the information we can confirm at this time. we cannot independently confirm if the person apprehended in watertown is connected to the bombing that happened earlier this week at the marathon. we are hearing different reports from different places as well is brian is hearing from sources on the ground there. but there has not been an official confirmation. and just to give you an idea how fluid the situation is, the fbi released a statement that said we are aware of the law enforcement activity in the greater boston area. the situation is ongoing. you just heard brian say that. we are working with local authorities to determine what happened. >> we have pierre thomas looking into the situation. but we're going to go to lindsay davis who is on the scene in watertown. can you hear us? >> reporter: i can. we are at the corner of mount auburn and kimball. it's a main street here that has just been shut down. police have set up a perimeter.

of the massachusetts state police. the man identified as suspect number two, the man in the white cap is at large. the evening began, apparently, with an attempted hold up at a 7-eleven store. video from inside the store matched the suspect number two from the marathon bombings. at that point they went and tried to steal a car, a mercedes suv. in the interim they shot and killed, according to state police, a police officer at m.i.t., another transit police officer was wounded. the chase continued here to watertown with explosives, according to authorities. the people in the car were shooting and throwing hand grenades. there was a shootout and at that point suspect number one, whose name we do not know, was shot. suspect number two escaped and now a huge manhunt o this area for suspect number two. residents have been told to stay inside. do not open the door for anybody except a police officer. they have given advice for people driving through watertown, do not pick up anybody. the description yesterday by the fbi that
