he threatened michelle knight, allegedly, to ensure the birth of amanda's baby. there are reports that he beat her and caused multiple miscarriages. also, that he handled this 6-year-old girl as a daughter. there were trips outdoors into public. how unusual is it for kidnappers to bond with their victims, and is it unusual for them to treat multiple victims differently? >> let's point out we have almost no precedence for exactly this sort of situation. the bottom line is we've seen sexually motivated captors take captives before, but not so many at once and not for such a long duration. we don't have a whole lot to compare this to. it would appear that ariel castro had favorites. it flies in the face of the idea that he would make michelle knight save jocelyn when she was born by giving her mouth to mouth resuscitation while at the same time michelle knight reports that he starved her and beat her pregnancies until she miscarried. so why michelle not allowed to be pregnant, if that is indeed true, and why was amanda allowed to have a child? perhaps michelle, he'd

the grandmother of michelle knight went to the home of gina dejesus hoping to find michelle knight yesterday, she arrived in a van full of balloons but found out michelle wasn't there. susan candiotti spoke with the grandmother and here is what the grandmother had to say. >> she has be . >> there are indications michelle did have a strained relationship with her family before she disappeared. there was some family tumult about custody of her child and it's a little bit complicated and we're trying to get the answers and trying to find out why authorities are not telling police where she is. >> that sort of does make a little bit of sense. we don't know the answer for why she hasn't made contact with her family exactly but perhaps that sheds some light on it. the other thing is that michelle knight was on the fbi missing person's list. what's going on there? >> we checked the missing person's database, it says recovered for amanda berry and nothing for michelle knight. her case remained open with cleveland police. according to the missing persons report police tried contacting her family 12 t

that woman's name is michelle knight. she reportedly went missing in 2000, when she was just 20 years old. the other two women is amanda berry, who went missing at the age of 16, almost 17, back in 2000 -- well, that was ten years ago, i should say, in 2003, and georgina de jesus, who went missing at the age of 14 in 2004. again, those three women all found alive, living in the same house, not far from, disputed exactly how far from the area where they first disappeared. one reporter told me it was several blocks. i have also been told it was several miles. but in the general vicinity of the area that they all disappeared in. joining me now on the phone is angela garcia. her aunt lives across the street from the house where the women were found. angela, i appreciate you joining us. first of all, were you at the house today? did you see what happened? >> okay, no. i'm going to tell you what i've seen the days that i've been here. >> okay. >> yesterday, we was outside, all the family was outside with the kids running bicycl

susan, tell us about the aggravated murder charges and how that relates to what michelle knight went through. >> reporter: hi, jake. the prosecutor is considering whether to file aggravated murder charges based on the statements that were said to have been made by michelle knight in part. cnn obtained that initial police report in which michelle knight, a victim in this case, tells a horrifying story about being pregnant, she said, at least five times, raped by ariel castro. and each time she said she became pregnant, he starved her, she said, for at least two weeks, and even worse, he then punched her in the stomach several times with each pregnancy in order that she would miscarry. and it is on that basis that the prosecutor is apparently considering whether to file aggravated murder charges. and, of course, jake, it could be a difficult charge to prove, only because they don't have forensic evidence, of course, after such a long period of time. on the other hand they do have very strong eyewitness testimony from michelle knight herself as well as possibly the two other young women

when berry went into labor, castro ordered michelle knight to deliver the child. the baby was delivered in a pool or tub to contain the mess. once the child was born, there were moments of horror. the child stopped breathing and everyone screamed and ariel castro allegedly threatened to kill michelle knight if the baby didn't survive. according to the report, michelle knight said she breathed into the child's mouth to keep her alive. the revelation that the women were bound, that chains and ropes were in the home, is consistent with the accounts of fernando cologne, engaged to ariel castro's ex-wife until her death last year. cologne told me castro would beat her vigorously, sometimes with barbells. >> she told me she was locked in the house, he had tinted the windows, she had padlocked the doors. the only time she was able to come out was for her appointments, that was it. >> reporter: but fernando cologne was convicted of molesting two of castro's two children several years ago. he's long said he's innocent claiming castro orchestrated the charges against him to

michele knight's mother hopes to see her daughter soon. michele is 32 now, but 21 when she disappeared in 2002, and had a rocky relationship with her mother. police thought they might have been a runaway. knight's another spoke to nbc's savannah guthrie. >> do you feel your daughter wants to see you? >> yeah. i know she's probably an at the world because she thought she would never be found. thank god somebody did. i had my doubts, but then i looked on the bright side. i did go to god and i prayed for her, you know, some kind of thing to tell me at least if she is alive or not. >> and we want to update you on an issue we first raised yesterday. we questioned how a dispatcher handled amanda berry's frantic call to 911. that 911 operator is under fire for "sending police as soon as we can get a car open" and hanging up before the police arrived. the handling of the call is under review. according to a statement, we have noted some concerns which will be the focus of our review, including the call taker's failure to remain on the line with ms

now, tonight in ohio a candlelight vigil for gina dejesus and michelle knight. there could be more charges to come against their alleged captor, ariel castro. it says when at least one of the women got pregnant, castro allegedly starved her for at least two weeks and then punched her in the stomach until she miscarried. this allegedly happened multiple times. we'll have more on castro's arraignment in a moment. >>> i also spoke with his former in-laws, including the sister of his ex-wife who says that castro is to blame for her sister's death. meanwhile, the mother of one of the victims, gina dejesus, is speaking out in her first interview. nancy reid spoke about gina's first night home. >> she said, mom, i don't want to stay in the room. i said, you don't have to anymore. so that's part of the process, of her healing, and knowing that she can now do what she wants. >> she said she doesn't want to stay in the room. >> nope. >> well, much has been made about the connections. between the castro family and gina dejesus' family, it's really fascinating, the connecti

but michelle knight, she got kidnapped and then she lived not far from an elementary school. ariel castro was a school bus driver. he recently got fired for parking his school bus for a long time at that elementary school. it didn't belong there. that elementary school just a couple blocks away from where michelle knight lived, where she had lived. so is there a connection, who knows. but that's very eerie and investigators are very much interested in that because why would he park the bus there and that's just right around the corner, actually a couple blocks away, from where michelle knight lived. >> belief from police, finally, is that all three women were lured into his car in different locations and then taken back to his house? >> that's correct. amanda berry's case, for example, she worked at a burger king so one day she's walking home. this guy comes up, turns out to be ariel, she says, and at that time she didn't know him, and he offers her a ride, says my son works at that burger king. she felt some comfort there, she got in with him. then gina dejesus, the story sh

michelle knight is taken off the list. why was that? >> yeah. 15 months after she disappeared, she was taken off that list. and we reached out to cleveland police to ask why. and they say that basically they were just following protocol, that they were unable to reach a family member that was able to give a definitive answer that she was still missing. in that case, they we moved her name. but the case remained open with cleveland police. and it shows, cording to the missing persons report we obtained, that they tried 12 times over the years to reach out to family members, and find her, even as recently as last november. but what's interesting here, brianna, is that last january, it says that it was validated that -- it seems like perhaps a family member was reached, and was able to validate she was still missing. we're still waiting to hear from cleveland police on that. >> all interesting details. pam brown for us here in cleveland, thank you very much. let's go to washington for a little story there. this morning everyone in the west

a third, michelle knight, vanished at the age of 20. and now, all three have been found alive after life inside this home. a flag on the porch. a crime scene inside. and on the right, there is the front door. that dark space where a stranger heard a cry for help and refused to turn away. tonight, we have new details about the women, the three brothers under arrest, and the heroes of this rescue, as breaking free, the escape in cleveland begins. and abc's david muir is there. david? >> reporter: diane, good evening. we are learning exclusive, new details about the dynamic inside that home among the women. we know two of them have left the hospital tonight, including amanda berry and her little girl. you can see the balloons here on the house waiting to welcome them home. and about that little girl, she's missing two front teeth. one on the top. one on the bottom. we've also learned that her mother was quietly homeschooling her inside that house. tonight, the balloons and flowers growing. a homecoming waiting for amanda berry. seen here i

michele knight also said she delivered amanda's baby. castro threatened to kill her if that baby didn't survive. obviously completely different than what happened to her. what does this tell you about the roles the women played in this sick situation? >> there were certainly roles that they played. there was a hierarchy. i think he looked at one female perhaps for sex, another one to be the genetic pool for his off spring, another to be his assistant and kind of mother the other women when he wasn't around and i'm sure casey certainly knows who fits in which role. >> do you think there were roles he had assigned to them? >> it's entirely possible. you have to remember we haven't seen anything quite like this ever. so there's really nothing in the criminalology books we have to compare to it. amanda has emerged as the leader, the rebel. the other two we know that michelle's family said she had a psychological issue that made her unaware of her surroundings. she had lost custody of a child. so she may be mentally challenged in some way. gi
