i am the director of the san francisco center for the womens' initiative and i grew up in san francisco and i absolutely seen the power of this organization to change womens' lives, to change our neighborhoods, to change your communities, to change families and you can imagine i have been there a long time and really believe in what we're doing and i am excited to share with you a little bit about our impact and ideas that we may focus on to continue to help so just a little bit for those that don't know about us. we are celebrating our 25th anniversary. we have been providing high potential low income women with business training and funding and on going support to start and actually expand their businesses and become economically self sufficient. a little bit about who we serve. we've actually served over 26,000 women since we began in 1988. 700 women will be served this year in san francisco alone. 99% of our women are low income or extremely low income. fort% are latina. 13% have a documented disability. 23% are over 50 years old and we see women with 15 kinds

and so, on behalf of the city and county of san francisco, on behalf of the san francisco board of supervisors, i know you have gotten many honors, but this is the best one, because it's coming from your friends, your partner in crime and someone who absolutely adores you and i want to thank you for your commitment and so today we honor sheryl davis. [ applause ] abdullah says he has something after me. you know, i don't want to get, as supervisor breed mentioned, emotional, but i do want to say that although i have been here before, and spoken in front of the board of supervisors, today is especially unique and special, because supervisor breed is among the board of supervisors. and i think when we talk about -- you know, i appreciate the opportunity to be recognized and acknowledged, but when you talk about being a symbol for a community of hope and determination, i think supervisor breed represented that for not just the western edition, but youth all over. i have been really fortunate in my life to be able to go to places where people are interested in helping and supporting from the board

after nearly seven years on the police force san francisco police officers john coffee and david san's mission state and is gang enforcement officers became frustrated by the cycle of violence they witnessed permeated in the gang culture of san francisco. the officers developed an outreach program in 2010 to help secure jobs for young men in an effort to chem then from participating in gang life. so now, i'm going to tell you a story that will relate to me that shows the special kind of individuals i'm talk about and how they helped a young man named carlos. the officers have seen carlos hanging out with gang members and suspected that he might be involved in a elicit activities around the mission areas after warning him that he was headed down the wrong path carlos was arrested is six months later when he was relevancy released from jail, the officers approached him about taking up a job as an alternate form of lifestyle with the approval of the captain officers cathy and san put together a contract securing a job for carlos if in turn he would stay away from gang members if he took t

first off the san francisco district serves northern california, santa cruz to the border and san francisco is not all of what we do. in san francisco last year we did about 200 sba loans and average loan size is $500,000. it's pretty good size. it's not the micro-programs that we support through the lenders and working solutions is one of those and we have others in the city and the bay area so we so micro-lending support but the main program is a guarantee loan program and 100 banks do those loans in the area and just san francisco city we did about 200 loans for about 105 million -- at 100 banks in a year. of that about 25% of the total for women owned business and 10% in addition were 50-50 ownership so about a third of the lending in san francisco we did last year were for businesses majority owned women or 50-50 women owned business so a significant percentage. nationally it's 20% of all sba funding is to women owned business so compare san francisco to the rest of the country we do larger percentage in san francisco. again those are larger businesses. as i mentioned they're businesse

we employ over 1400 partners in san francisco and which 85% live within san francisco. we are a long-term member of the san francisco work force investment board. we are a founding member of the united way bay area road map to cut poverty committee. last year we were supporter of the mayor's summer jobs youth program. this year we are as well and recommit today adding 50 more partners in 2013. april 27th this year we worked with the san francisco giants and dpw to have a san francisco clean sweep. we have 1400 partners, families, customers and businesses and working together contributing 500 hours to clean up the city in nine different areas. our partners participate in monthly dpw events. star bucks also supports charitable nonprofit organizations to cash and in kind donation. some examples are united way of bay area, bay area scores, community growth, friends of san francisco public library, san francisco aids walk, and the lgbt community center and glide. that's a small slice of what we do in local community and regionally wise, too. now to talk about our projected s

my family has been in san francisco for 125 years. any other grandfather was here in the 1800 and my grandmother was the lead are of the garment union. we are in the house, right? i think it's not that we are so cool or whatever, good job, but we stand on the shoulders of giants. look at you. we are all different colors. this is amazing. the jazz festival came out of many cultures. we had to work against redevelopment. this is how the jas festival started. the music with do, the stories we do come out of real life. mark worked with the restaurant union. you know, the stories we do, the music we do comes out alive here in san francisco and to be honored for it is not just as the young brother said, over here, it's not really about us. it's about the people that we are representing and nowadays. the way history is being written is through music and stories and images on the internet and artist have been doing that for a long time. i would like to acknowledge kerry schulman vment she's been representing people of color in this city for a

she moved to san francisco in the 1960's. one memory her daughter often jocks about is her mother never publicly said her age. we can say with confidence that she was pretty senior, and she had beautiful memories of the hills for it's sunny weather and very friendly neighborhood. she worked as a physical educational teacher at the she was a founding member of many organizations. she also carved out a sign for the benchs and laid out stone mosaic. she had her hand in prompting community gardens and had a hand in the design of interstate 280. now anyone that has a hand in the design of a freeway, you know, has got to be pretty strong-willed and that is exactly what she was. she had some say in the development of at&t park and we can thank her for bringing the 19 bus to potrillo hill. in san francisco. he is integrated with job-creation and we have teamed up to create 6,000 jobs for youth and disadvantaged kids. so education for me is a direct link to our new modern 21st century workforce we must have. so much that literally every trip to washington, d.c., because of the advocacy that we have through our school district and keeping me informed of the different programs to advocate. i was there with certificate arnie duncan this morning where we were thanking him for the investment in promise neighborhoods and the school investment grants coming from the federal government. we have to keep that dialogue going and i'm adding to that. for example, i think to answer i have personally adopted all the middle schooled as my philanthropic goal as along as i am mayor of san francisco. all 12 middle middle schools are going to get more of the resources that they need to be successful. i adopted the middle schools for a direct purpose. i asked our school district where is the biggest drop-off

it was formed by the san francisco redevelopment nation 2010. at the time, called the san francisco community investment fund and it's eligible to apply for federal market credits. it's been award $80 million, $35 million in 2010 and $45 million in 2011. this is a federal money that will benefit low-income communities. the investment fund has completed projects totaling $23.7 of its $80 million allocation, including $8 .7 million to college track, which is in the bayview-hunters point community, $15 million for the san francisco jazz project right down the street in the hayes valley area. with the remaining $53.6 million, plans to approve four upcoming project, the act strand theater, the boys and girls club, that will be located at 380 financial fulton street, et cetera. the san francisco community investment fund is advised by representatives in approved low-income communities. i served on the san francisco redevelopment agency commission and i know the good that this program can do. now that redevelopment has dissolved, san francisco -- this

it's a long way from the center of san francisco. it's some subject i've been speaking to for most of my ten years on the commission because we lose millions of dollars in revenue each year because concerts that want to be here can't come here because there's no adequate facility for that type of concert that needs a facility with 17 or 18,000 to make it work. and our density as was mentioned by mr. valentino is actually one of the great selling points for this arena being here because in other citix, such as indianapolis, and denver, denver has three facilities in close proximity to each other. ~ citix basketball, baseball, and football. almost everybody comes from a long ways away. because denver itself is not a very dense city, and the population is a lot less than san francisco. ~ cities so, the brilliance of having this facility right in the heart of san francisco as you've got 8 25,000 residents and you have another 2 to 300,000 people who come here during the day for purposes of their employment, for tourism, for visitors who

francisco, san jose, and oakland. the reasons they're doing that are ones you are quite well aware of. greenhouse gases obviously are most affected by driving, less driving means lessee missions, more people can walk, bike, and take transit. they don't need to drive as much. water use is another great reason for directing people towards urban areas. an interesting fact, sierra club recently, i guess about three years ago did a per capita water analysis and found that san francisco is the lowest in the bay area by far in term of water use of 108 gallons per gallons per day in county which is relatively urban, too, which makes a difference how people live and how we consume our resources. and then a thing that i think is less talked about but that is one of the things underpinning plan bay area as it's trying to reach beyond lubetionv and transportation towards social and economic activity, cities try to offered [speaker not understood] even as afford ability is an issue in our more dense areas. they found social connec

we can still achieve the spirit of what the city is trying to do and get san franciscans, and san francisco businesses to benefit. >> follow-up on that. how would you characterize the outreach to the minority and small business communities in san francisco? about the same as always? >> no. we did significantly a higher level of outreach than we do in a normal construction project. and because of many people in the local community really work hard to get this project to where it is, and advocate for it at the state and federal level. it was important for us to try to maximize the extent that we could given the constraints of the law; as i mentioned, you even heard references, outreach going back five years to the contracting community. we required the bidders for this contract to come to meet and greet sessions with the contractors. we have a number of different forms and try to share all of the perspective bidding information so the program was funding positions in our sbe office and also in the office of economic and workforce development try to make sure we are maximizing opportunities. i

when i graduated, i move to san francisco. my first job, i started working developing economic policies for low-income communities statewide in california. i worked with young people, parents, families are around issues that concern our neighborhoods, whether it was communities, affordable housing, public schools, or just planning issues in neighborhoods like parks. i did that and actually ran for the board of education here in san francisco. i got a term on the school board working for families in our public school system and actually worked for the lawyers community and i came to the board of supervisors. >> why did you choose to live in san francisco? supervisor kim: you know, i do not know if i have a good answer for that. i just wanted to try it out. >> tell me what motivated your interest in politics. supervisor kim: that is a tough question to answer. i never had any intention to get involved in the electoral process. >> really? supervisor kim: i was always politically active. i was always working on statewide initiativ

[ applause ] . >> thank you. i yelled out wife and family to make sure that there was a way in which to acknowledge the tremendous sacrifice that lou gerardo has given. when you see construction workers, you know something big is going to happen. it has in the same level of excitement that i have seen in the rebuilding of general hospital and the uc medical center. every time we touch our health care system, we have something that promises a better life for people and barbara is as excited for this announcements as well. saint luke's are incredible institutions for san francisco. that's why we thought it would be best for the whole city to make this project happen because of the laws of the state of california that require that seismic upgrade of our health institutions, because of the tremendous pressure to improve san francisco and bay area and the economical structures that face this hospital and so many other hospitals. the job is never d

in san francisco is very high. the next things i want to mention is status of citizenship. with working solutions we had to turn down entrepreneurs who didn't qualify in terms of citizenship status. the next thing i want to that talk about is affordable space. a number of businesses are approved but not funded because of losing space or not able to find an amenable space for their business. another thing that i wanted to mention that i didn't put on her are child care services. that has come up quite a bit recently. in terms of post and business monitoring some of the challenges our entrepreneurs are face ago so these are people that have obtained a loan and operating their business and these are the struggles they're facing. the biggest one hands down is financial management. keeping a close and careful eye on overall finances of the business. this proves to be challenging. a lot of times is because the people that come to us they're extremely passionate about their product. they have been a barita for nine years

not only in san francisco, but for the families around the world. and the exporatorium does so much more for our san francisco communities. it offers our region's children and families 3,500 under served children and families will have free, science workshops. 70. yes. 70 under served middle high school students, opportunities to participate in college prep courses right here and training and hiring of over 200 of our city's youth, in docet jobs called explainers who will be warmly greeting you in front of the brand new station of the exporatorium of muni. [ applause ] >> so that is the function and the purpose of the exporatorium and let me tell you a little bit about how this place does even more than that. it provides public new access, public access to water-front sites for the first time in over 50 years. two, brand new acres of public accessible open space. access to our historic bulkhead at pier 15 and the bay history walk. links to the urban and marine environment with two new, brand new pedestrian bridges. and public access to a spectacular

[ applause ] >> you know, some months ago this was just an abandoned pier and 300 million dollars later and a lot of love and attention, it has been transformed into a place of discovery, a place of imagination, and a place of repose. in this new neighborhood, here along the embarcadaro, the san francisco exporatorium is truly reborn bigger and better than ever, and we know in this new location and facility and sort of a new sense of enthusiasm it is going to be a huge success and a integral part of what visitors come to enjoy in san francisco and of course what all residents in the bay area come to enjoy. it is fantastic, i know that my kids used to love to come visit. i know that they will be excited and they are kind of big now and they will be excited to come and visit this new facility as well. we just aired and i want to remind for those of who you did not see it, i did a half hour special, thank you very much.
