i am a retired investigator in louisiana. i was part of the witness protection in louisiana. we did this under the local district attorney's office. i find that they have a lot of flaws with the witness program. they had a lot of troubles with victims and witnesses because they would promise them certain things to get the case solved. i found they were wasting a lot of money. how do you control the spending as far as getting the witness to court? guest: every witness that enters the program was signed a memorandum of understanding. it is a document that lays out everything the federal government will do and will not do for you. the witness knows ahead of time how much money they will receive for a time of up to six months. they know what kind of assistance they will receive it so long as they are willing to make efforts to find a job and cooperate with the service and ultimately testify. we do not have many programs in the federal system now and have not had for many years. the first year or two, a lot of things were new. for example, one of the very first witnesses we were t
