workers at this chemical plant in louisiana run for their lives. threatening them and the residents nearby: a towering ball of fire black smoke -- but dangerous chemicals. this after a deadly explosion at the facility in the town of geismar. we was passing by on a delivery, we saw big flames in the air shooting up we looked over the whole unit this was the scene at the williams geismar plant, about 20 miles southeast of baton rouge. it exploded, erupting into flames-- sparking widespread fear and panic from workers and many nearby. it looked bad, so we just pray that everybody's ok." more than 70 people are being treated at local hospitals. several are suffering from burns. along with the injuries, the other serous concern is about the chemicals that are being released into the air. the chemical that we think was involved in this is a highly volatile chemical but it's not one that would lead the lines like one would think. so, we think we are ok in this regard." police officials say they believe the chemical burned up in the fire which is now out.

it was in south louisiana in donaldsonville. the plant manager says the explosion happened as nitrogen was being off loaded from a tanker truck. thursday's explosion just ten miles away in louisiana killed two and injured more than 100. still no word on what caused that explosion. the sheriff says the general public was never in any real danger from chemical leaks. thousands of colorado residents are watching and waiting hoping good weather conditions will continue to give firefighters the upper hand. crews are working to put out hot spots amid the 473 destroyed homes. george howell joins us live from colorado. 473 destroyed homes. my oh, my. what is the latest on this mammoth fire now? >> reporter: don, definitely a fire that has caused a lot of damage here in the colorado springs area. there is some good news. at this point from officials 45% contained. great news when you consider what we heard the other day that it was 30% contained. it is a sign that firefighters are gaining ground and getting the help of mother nature. jus
