also bart is offering charter buses at four bart stations. here's a live picture from the walnut creek station. you can see already a number of people waiting in line. this is one of four stations where you can catch a charter bus. the other three. the buss will be able to take 2,000 to 4,000 people between the east bay and san francisco. now those buss are going to run from -- now those buses are going to run from -- you can see why there is a lot of people out in line. tickets are handed out on a first come first serve basis. you do have to show that round trip ticket in order to board the bus in the city. 4:33 is the time. san francisco ferry expanding to carry the parking lot commuter -- the bart commuters. janine de la vega is in oakland where the first ferry will leave at 6:00 this morning. janine. >> reporter: pam, that is right. it's empty right now. but about an hour we are expected to see a lot more people here. the ticket office opens then at 5:30. and operators say they are ready to handle the extra commuters. the ferry service sa

on a typical night, thousands of fans would use bart to get to and from the coliseum. but, let's begin with pritchett, he's live at the caltrans building where bart and its unions returning to its bargaining table within just the past hour. >> reporter: there is certainly some news tonight not just of bart negotiating with the major unions, there is been an agreement reached between bart and one of the smaller unions involved in the labor dispute. which will represents professional staff and supervisors, these are mainly middle managers bart tells me and this union, was the first to reach a deal with the labor dispute back in 2009. the main negotiation between the major unions involved are taking place right now. fciu and itau. we did see some of the members of the unions and bart walking into this building just before 6:00. that's when these talks resume. here is one of the members ex op michl as they return into the unions. it was the arrival of the two nh levelled state mediators sent here by the governor. the talks broke down between ths before the midnight strike

this is the fremont bart station. one of five stations where charter buss will be picking up passengers. again they are free but the seats and space on there they are limited. as charter bus service gets under way in fremont, more charter buss are being sent to contra costa county. alex savidge is live in walnut creek. and you're saying you should get there as early as possible. right? >> reporter: yes. they saw huge crowds here. people trying to get on these charter buses. that is why people did arrive very early this morning. some people told me they got here at 3:30 this morning. and now you can see they earned themselves a spot on one of the buses. here at the walnut creek bart station things were so packed they saided seven more. that means a total of -- no trains are in service. bart is returning a total of 80 of these buses picking up from number of stations all across the east bay. all of these buses can only handle a small fraction of the normal number of passengers that bart can handle. that is 4,000 or so c

bart has reached out to the unions to try to set up another meeting and bart says that they are confident they can try to get things going again hopefully sometime today but meanwhile take a look at this right now. the union workers are still here trying to remind people of their message. >> we're frustrated. we don't want to have this disruption going on. bart left us no choice. >> the emotion that you hear is basically, you know, the venting of our members feeling that they're unappreciated. >> what do we want? >> fair contract! >> reporter: the two sides are still very divided. >> we think the strike was unnecessary. we want to get our employees back. we want to get the trains going. we want to come up with a contract that's fair for our workers but lets us make the investment to keep the system safe for everybody into the future. >> reporter: as it stands, bart offered an 8% pay hike over 4 years in addition to asking workers to pay towards pensions and benefits. the union says it's not good enough. >> this is how serious their efforts was that the proposal was only going to afford us

all bart employees get a benefits package worth $52,000 and the cost to bart goes up each year. >> right now bart employees only pay $92 towards their healthcare and that's unheard of! most people pay four times as much. >> if anyone wants other than basics they pay on top of that plus co-pays. it averages out to our members paying $200 a month. >> we are not going to let this happen! this is what this strike is all about! >> reporter: neither side will disclose what they are proposing. another contentious issue, pensions. currently employees contribute zero. but bart employees explained their pensions are only 92% funded. and the transit agency opted out of social security in the late '80s so this pension is all they will have in retirement. >> bart pays the whole thing because we don't get social security. we're offering to pay a half percent per year to total 1.5%. >> reporter: who is right? that has no clear answer but one commuter suggested bart riders will not win. if bart gives in fares will go up. if they don't, it more long commutes like this. in alameda, ann notarangelo, kpix 5

we are on bart strike day 2. demand was so high for shuttle buses between oakland and san francisco, ac transit and bart are adding even more buses today. gets go to margie shafer on the phone with more from the transbay terminal in san francisco. how's it going? >> reporter: well, elizabeth, the transbay terminal is bustling. bart now has a total of 74 charter buses running on the bus bridge to san francisco. those free buses will transport between 4,000 and 5,000 people, a small percentage of the hundreds of thousands of transbay travelers but every bit helps. they can be accessed at el cerrito, dublin-pleasanton, fremont and walnut creek. many bart riders are hopping on ac transit. some passengers have added hours to their daily commute and it's taking a toll in extra time traveling and less time with the family. one woman said she is simply, haused. this commute remains off the rails with bart workers on strike the second day. back to you. >> thank you. pack your patience and water, too, as it's still hot. ba
